I don't think the white furniture choice is a problem in itself if you love it.
The look will go from total neutral to having character and life with the colours you bring in with what is stored on your shelves and any art you add.
If you want to keep it light and airy, add some accessories and accents with natural textures eg baskets, nature inspired objects and lighter woods.

Hi. I took this right from your idea book and I think you are spot on. I would stay white with the unexpected black chair. You could add a couple of black accents, in moderation.

I like Mark's idea of adding some reflective surfaces and anniau's thought on adding texture for interest.

Hi Peter. A quick rendering below to give you something of the feel of white furniture. Sorry I haven't sorted out the black office chair, but I'm on a lunch break and must get back to work. What strikes me about the original staging is the airiness brought to the room by the chair and the choice of art -- the latter works, though they're quite dark, have a great sense of space. Similarly, in the great pic Mark posted above, even though it's a much bigger room, the carpet has an airy feel, and the silver and mirror help in that respect too. This is important, I think, especially if you go for dark furniture. The white furniture wouldn't need it quite as much, but I'd still recommend keep that spatial dimension in mind when choosing art. With the white furniture, it is the art that would bring character to the room, I think. And, in all likelihood, the black chair.

If the walls and carpet are going to be off white, then the dark furniture gives the room a balance look.

I would go with brown

Thanks to everyone for responding - ideas for texture and color in the shelve are greatly appreciated as well! I am thinking a plant and a globe would be excellent pieces on the expedit shelves.

Reason I asked is I think you should consider placing the desk facing the window.

Yes a view out of the window from your desk would be lovely.
The Ikea Micke desk is not nearly as deep than the display one and will give more space.
I am a fan of globes too.

Micka desk is 41" wide. How wide is the room?

I really like the idea of considering the setup of the top-right photo above. The 2 file cabinets would be replaced with tall expedit shelving units. Then, I would place a piece of art in the center.

Since you like globes, it could be the map, as in this photo.
