Shower curtain HELP!

This is a horrible pic however the question remains, how do you deal with a shower curtain to the ceiling? I was thinking I would try to find a 9 foot curtain that I would hang in the guest bathroom but how do you find a 9 foot shower curtain liner? Am I the only one that maybe doesn't know! Do you agree with hanging curtain to ceiling?

No, it's not hung to the ceiling. I can't see the floor from you the picture, but it looks like you have it at the right height.
I think it looks odd this height. I was thinking it should be at least 8 ft? This is an older curtain up temporarily so I get this right.

Just make sure it hits close to the inside of the tub or shower. If it is too close to the ceiling, you will have no light or air.

Here's a slightly better pic. I wish I would have added a window but someday I will do a skylight. I just don't like this look with the curtain hung here.

I do know I still need to accessorize.

Get 2 rods. Hang your liner at the current height on the inner rod. Hand the 2nd outer rod at the ceiling for your decorative curtain. To compensate for the length, get a coordinating solid fabric to use as a border on the bottom. Finally, to hide the inside rod, have your decorative curtain go all the way across the top and pull it back with a drapery tie-back or just leave it closed.

    I can't believe I didn't think of the 2 rods! Thank you!!

On the next part, I may be lost. I was going to get a new curtain that is the length I want. I don't really follow your last part since wouldn't I use the curtain as I do today but with a different height liner or are you saying that wouldn't look right?

Sorry I don't understand your question. Are you talking about the fabric for the border or about the tieback?

Check online. Some stores sell an extra long liner.

There is no light fixture in ceiling above tub. Can you have one installed. NO don't take curtain to ceiling. Simpler curtain would look better.

Not the prettiest paint color for a bathroom. Repaint and match the shower curtain to walls so curtain is not the main attraction.

The curtain should go to the floor but as far as going up higher....why would you want to? I think it looks fine but I would go with solid or color block. I think the pattern you have us what's making it look awkward.

Standard shower curtains are 72" long. Window curtains go ceiling to floor. Shower curtains go from the edge of the tub up 72". That's it.

Before having higher curtain; make sure you have good light above shower area since your new curtain will block the light. The best way to have a perfect fitting is to have it custom made to your specific size selecting best fabric option for your décor. See our window treatment section for more panels examples.

I also think your shower curtain is a bit fussy for such a small space. I'd go bold instead.

You can always sew your own shower curtain, to the length you desire. If you want to keep this one, raise it as high to the top of the tub as possible and get an extra long liner. Too bad the tile goes up to the ceiling, I think that is much of the problem. Visually, the tile is drawing your eyes up to the ceiling.

There are a few other things you can do. One is adding an open cornice or spandrel on top over the shower. Another is getting a ceiling mount drape rod and using 2 regular curtains and spliting a liner (or using 2) leaving your liner on the normal rod. .

The curtain was only temporary as it was for my previous house. As for the paint, the builder would only let us choose one color for the whole house. Not ideal but nothing I could do so I went with the color I wanted for my main space and will paint bedrooms and bathrooms later. I have a couple rooms being worked on so I am taking it one at a time.

I plan to find a new curtain but thought it would look better hanging to the ceiling. That's what they did in the model and it looked better. I know I may need to have one made but I think visually it looks better. I can hang it 8 ft since my ceiling is 9 ft. Most of you do not seem to think I should do so but I had the tile done to ceiling because I think long term it holds up better than walls. Any curtain ideas are appreciated!

Grover, that is way too much for me! :) Thank you for the idea though.

I think it would look silly all the way up at the ceiling. And I don't think they make liners that long either. You would have to buy fabric (plastic?) to make that. Shower curtains are generally about 72" square. Ikea does sell some very long fabric curtains.

If you think the walls hold up better with tiles, then what about the ceiling? It probably gets more moisture... Not necessary with a good quality fan. Anyway, too late now, but maybe next time. 8 feet is good, I think, especially with a less busy fabric. Nine feet would be too high.

    looks nicer!
I don't like tile on the ceiling so that's why I didn't do it. I think maybe 8 ft would be better. I would use 2 rods like suggested earlier for the inside liner? At this point, I'm stuck with this bathroom so I just need to make it better.

Don't get 2 rods, and don't keep that curtain! Get a white cotton or nylon curtain and call it a day. It will get wet, but it won't leak, and if it gets mildew, just put it in the washer with some bleach. If you use a solid white fabric, you can make it whatever size you need. If you really want it to go to the floor, get a thin plastic liner, and hang it from the same loops.
You can hang it from the ceiling with a little "hospital-style" aluminum track mounted on the ceiling. The curtain hangs from little chains that roll in the track. Looks cool, works well. I got mine at the local hardware store. Get some white towels too.

I am having the same problem. I think I will sew a similar fabric (which is a mesh to let the steam out) along the top of my shower curtain and use the two rod idea. Thanks
  • 11 years ago
instead of a shower curtain have you considered a frameless glass e closure?

I know you've probably already resolved this issue, but just in case. I found most of the responses to your question to be missing the point entirely. I, too, desire the designer look of the ceiling to floor shower curtain, and have pondered this dilemma. The decorators do not have to worry about a liner, :) however, there are a couple of options for those of us who do:

    1. Use a 6 x 9 drop cloth (attach with drapery clip rings), or

    2. Use a 108" WIDE shower curtain liner like this:

    InterDesign Vinyl Shower Liner, X-Wide 108 x 72, Clear https://www.amazon.com/dp/B003M6ANOW/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_mdV4vbCN5SSQ4

and hang it sideways with drapery ring clips, in tandem with your outer curtain. I tried the two-rod idea and found that it detracted from the "look" I was going for. BTW...my curtain is a 12x9 canvas drop cloth from lowes ($21) attached to drapery rings with hand folded pinch pleats.

I folded the "ruffle" down at the top to take up the extra length. Good luck!

I've seen curtains hung from a ceiling track by chains, about 12 inches I think. I thought they looked lovely. Saw it somewhere on Houzz

That is one helluva shower curtain, lol!
