Has anyone bought a VI Spring mattress. Am considering one, but they are only sold in large cities with Atlanta being the closest. Other consideration is finding an organic one, way too many chemicals in some of the foam ones. A friend recommended a coverless foam topper from a local mattress company and I got one, sleeps ok, but bed is within couple of feet of the gas heat register and the foam has turned very yellow - off the bed with that. Will be researching on the " the mattress underground" as posted by Kari. Thanks!

grobby, I'm interested in a natural/organic mattress as well. So far, I've found that Essentia or Hastens are really nice (the last one has a shocking price tag). I don't have a store close by to go and see any of these (closest I believe is NYC). If you find any new info, let us know.

I have a futon -- cotton wrapped around a foam core with a cotton cover. Very happy with this.

I owned handful of mattresses in my lifetime. The last one I bought was 6 years ago and it still looks and feels like I got it yesterday. It's Stearns & Foster, pricey but well worth it.

Ultra-tec....was it a pillow-top or tight-top? I'm missing the old fashioned, last forever, flip-able type.

I also purchased a Saatva mattress about 6 months ago. We are very pleased with it and the customer service was excellent.

The label says Bradenburg Luxury Plush. It's not flip-able type. I rotate the mattress 180° every 3 to 4 month out of habit. It's a firm mattress and just like I said there's no visible dent anywhere whatsoever. I remember trying several different types and makes of mattresses what were in my budget at that time (max $1000 for queen size) by laying on them and rolling around for few minutes but I wasn't quite sure of any of them. and was ready to walk out. The salesman pointed me to Stearns & Foster which was on sale from $1,800+ to $1,280. I made myself at home on it and knew right there that it's going to go home with me.
I imagine they probably cost more today.

Have sold several different mattress brands during my 15 year career. Tempur-pedic does have the highest satisfaction rate. That is why they offer the 90 day sleep warranty. My husband has been undergoing chemo for last 6 months and says he could not have gotten any sleep without his Tempur-Cloud. It's the only way he could get comfortable. With the Ergo system it is great for reading and watching TV in bed, too.

I sleep on an Englander, frequently. They are one of the oldest mattress companies in US. They offer little support to retailer, no marketing...just a great product and a very good price. They honor their warranty's, only had 1 complaint ever and they promptly took care of it. Sold Serta for about 6 months, approximatley 30% of those mattresses failed. Company is great at finding a way not to honor their warranty.

Restonic has been voted #1 by Consumer's Digest for 8 years in a row and the Women's Choice award for the last 2 years. They make some superb latex mattresses and a couple of good hybrids. My sons and most of our delivery guys swear by their latex and gel beds.

Something a sales person should always tell you is to buy a mattress protector. If your mattress becomes soiled your warranty is voided. No body wants to inspect a soiled mattress. Sleep tight Houzzers:)

I've tried everything from waterbeds, sleep number beds, futons (otherwise known as concrete in cotton), firm mattresses (turns out they're bad for you. That just seems like stating the obvious.) But the mattress I finally found is the TempurPedic Memory Foam mattress.

We experimented when our tempurpedic just wasn't right - woke with aching back every day. We found Novosbed at a fraction of the cost (no showrooms translates to less overhead). We love it!

Got the Tempurpedic supreme "breeze" medium firmness September of 2013. Like the three bears --just right. Yes it does have a slight odor for about a week, but it goes away. The breeze series is much cooler than the original which we had for 8 years. I believe all mattresses eventually breakdown with the center hump effect. I have a lower lumbar issue so my doctor advised against a soft mattress and he had the same mattress after our discussion. We have a year warranty to switch to a different style and or firmness.

A great mattress doesn't have to be outrageously expensive. In fact, for anyone on a budget I recommend a great pillow top for mattress and I promise you won't regret it! :)

We have our King mattress in the master, which needs replaced, and our firm Queen in the guest room. The queen is from The Original Mattress factory. We recently slept in the guest room and remembered how wonderful that mattress is--no back or joint pain when waking up. They are fairly inexpensive as far as mattresses go. Growing up I had a Sealy posturepedic, I could lay on that for even just a half an hour and feel the better for it.

Plush tops are often just memory foam on the top of the mattress. You can buy a memory foam pad separately, which is a lot cheaper than buying a luxury plush-top mattress. And you can flip your mattress.

You have to buy on sale, as mattress prices are a scam.

Memory foam sleeps too hot for me. I agree, putting a latex topper on to a firm or ex-firm, tight-top, flip-able mattress seems to give more longevity and make more financial sense.

I have a Haestons and I love it. My husband doesn't. I am always typically cold and he is a walking furnace. The horsehair in the bed basically collects your body heat - great for cold nights in Sweden (company is Swedish) but not so great for people like my husband or in hot climates. Still trying to find the perfect mattress ....

I did so much research before I finally decided to buy a very expensive organic natural latex mattress at a specialty shop that I traveled out of state to buy and see. I went to all the sites mentioned above. It is very difficult to make a decision while trying out all kinds of different things in the store. I decided to get the slightly firmer top layer as I was convinced that sinking into a mattress is what was causing my arthritis and back pain to be worse. I am now so sorry that I made this expensive purchase and it will cost me more money to try and fix it and it won't be a guarantee that I wouldn't be throwing more money down the drain. This company uses Dunlop latex. I have only had this mattress 16 months. It is king size with the core being two twin core layers so you can mix and/or match each side of the bed. There is firm Dunlop on the bottom, then I got the 90-D firm in the middle and then there is a 75-D soft thinner layer.

This winter, I had some very severe arthritis attacks in my hips and lower back. I am convinced that this mattress has a good deal to do with it as I did not do anything out of the ordinary to have these attacks.

I was changing the sheets on this bed today and I just had to put my first-hand information out there. First, if you decide to buy a latex bed, do not pass off the caveat that these mattresses are extremely heavy. You literally have to be a Sumo wrestler to change sheets! I would need help to flip the cores. This is very difficult for a person with arthritic back and hips. Don't downplay this information! Second, don't let anyone tell you that these mattresses don't sag. I've got a pretty pronounced divot where I sleep. Husband now sleeps in a guest room so his side is not sagging, making the sag on my side pretty noticeable. About a year after having this mattress and when I was having a major arthritic attack, I called the mattress store to inquire about their toppers as I thought that this might remedy the situation. Understand that their toppers cost almost as much as someone might pay for a whole mattress somewhere else. Owner told me that he would recommend replacing the firm core with a medium. Again, that would cost me even more than a topper, and I would just have to get rid of the firm core as they don't take them back. This mattress cost me by itself about $4,000. Now, I am faced with spending about $1600 to replace cores. I didn't do anything because I can't decide what to do to remedy the situation. Will a topper do it or do I have to replace the cores and what if it still doesn't work? In the meantime, the darn thing is hard and putting pressure on my hips, and even though I got the firm layer, it is sagging!!! Other than the claimed fact that these mattresses don't off-gas nasty chemicals, I feel like I have made an expensive mistake.

Love my Tempurpedic! We have three, and all are different models. I love them all, but I think the original is still my favorite.

Very important - avoid metal at all cost! No metal frames and definitely no spring mattresses! The more metal pieces in your bed and/or mattress the more magnetic field it creates. Laying for couple of hours in a magnetic field will affect your health and you won't be as rested as you should. Same goes for sitting all day in a metal chair. The weaker your body is the more this will affect you.

I have slept in an old iron bed with a flat spring for years. I sleep well and have no back problems. I'm a senior. @maggiejnyc: don't know if I would sleep even better if I were not on this bed. My biggest problem is that it is 48" and it is hard to find a replacement mattress for it (the one I have is getting on in years).

I have had a pillow top tempurpedic for ten years and love it. I find it a challenge to sleep on anything else.

I just got a new organic latex mattress and haven't had it for long, but love it so far! They are heavy though, but never need flipping and are supposed to last longer than any other mattress. I haven't noticed a problem with changing sheets. Just a little more effort due to being heavy when you tuck in sheets and blankets, but that's also kind of nice as they stay tucked in nicely. I ordered online from Plush Beds and I see they commented above last year. Tried a Tempurpedic in the store and it felt great but was concerned about the high price and off gassing. Have had a Sleep Number for years and liked it fairly well, but I like this one much better. Latex mattresses are fairly firm so I ordered a medium firmness which is the most popular from the website. It's brand new but I'm very happy so far.

We have had our Tempurpedic now for almost 9 years and still love it. Highly recommend that brand....worth every penny!

We have been through two tempurpedics in 16 years due to changing bed size from queen to king. We love them however, the oldest one (queen) we gave to our daughter and she now claims that she cannot sleep in it at all as it gives her back aches and headaches, it is a very old mattress and we are looking to replace it with something with a less chemical stew as I think it actually off gasses more as it breaks down. Our king has been great for at least 8 years, it is also sagging and I wake up with painful hips at times , I am shopping for new mattresses and would love to find something that is more organic as I am concerned about the chemicals . Overall if you dont mind the chemicals and you can afford to replace after 9 years this is the best sleep ever , I dont get too hot and its certainly not a hard mattress. We live in Florida so temps dont often drop to low.

We bought a really expensive Tempurpedic and cannot sleep on it. It developed a sag in the middle after a couple of years (and we are light weights). My back would hurt every morning and each night I would toss and turn because of the heat that would cause me to sweat profusely. Decided not to invoke the warranty as I started reading I read about the chemicals (no wonder it smelled so bad when we first got it). Ultimately traded it in for a latex with organic cotton and no flame retardants added. Sleep is much better now !!

Saatva for sure... I went through 3 or 4 before I took the plunge and went for the Saatva. There are no stores so it is really nerve-wracking. However, the customer service is EXCELLENT!!! And I am about to swap all my guest mattresses as well. They mean it when you can return it no questions asked... (I have to admit that I did call just to see if they would process the return... then said I didn't really want to do it ).

Its our first time buying memory foam and I can't imagine going back to a spring mattress now. My husband suffers with his back and says that he has noticed a big improvement in the mornings. Casper, Leesa, and tuft&needle are newer brands who people seem to be raving about. They are adorable mattresses at a moderate price, but they feel much more luxurious! They all ship from online, but you get trials to test them out. A whole mattress is also compressed in a small box, and it's fun to unbox!

I think that the choice of a mattress is very specific from one person to another considering age. There cannot be one mattress that satisfies all people at all ages. I personally have only McRoskey mattresses, made in San Francisco, from cotton. They are expensive. They may not work for you but they sure do for me.

We bought a Talalay latex mattress. Love love love it. So hard to know what to get. We ruled out Tempurpedic because it is hard to turn sideways. Hubby has a bad shoulder so we ruled that out right away. Considered sleep # but didn't want to take the risk of an air mattress getting a hole. Then you are without a bed. I wouldn't think that would happen very often but I read a lot of reviews where that has happened.

There are more and more organic latex mattresses coming out now. We have no regrets. Have had the bed over a year and still is like brand new.

I did buy a futon loveseat with ottoman for my living room back in...2010?..., which is a Strata wallhugger style - I've napped on it but it's generally for seating, sometimes a place for an overnight guest to crash. I have a stearns and foster on our bed upstairs. It's actually held up well, though I may decide we need to add a topper so that we can push back the timeline on buying a new mattress. I have no clue what we'll get, but I definitely will be going to do in-person testing before I buy.

Hi! We plan to purchase an all latex bed (Flexus Comfort) with split his/her layers. Does anyone have e experience/advice with splitting layers and if there has ever been a "sinking in" noticed where the layers meet in the middle? I like the ability to adjust firmness with individual layers if necessary over buying one single 6"piece of latex.

Years ago my siblings fell for the hype and insisted my elderly mother get a Sleep Number bed. It cost a lot of money and she hated it. It's a glorified blow-up mattress in my opinion.
