My husband painted them. long process, but worth it in the end. He is very meticulous so if you're that way and use proper products...go for it!

The island was in our custom built house when we bought it. It had been oak as well.

Glad you like the idea of painting the cabinetry. We love the look too. So cheerful and bright. My husband used a latex paint, but said if he was doing it over he'd use a water based Rustoleum paint. We have painted other oak since this project and he prefers it. He primed everything and let it dry completely. After priming it took 3 coats of the white to fully cover the oak. He used a mini roller and brush for the surfaces. Good luck and post some pics of your DYI

Bornonthefourth, sorry it took me so long to reply. Steps my husband took were lightly sanding the original oak woodwork. Primed with KILZ, Painted with oil based paint: it took 3 coats for complete coverage. Good luck! Tedious process, but worth it in the end!

Love your transformation. Though we did all new cabinetry in the kitchen, I painted ALL the oak trim through out the house, Benjamin Moore, Advance, satin, White Dove, doing the steps your husband did. 3 coats, drying 24 hours between coats. I used BM STIX primer to start with. On the doors the best thing ever was using the Wooster Micro-Plush roller. Absolutely no roller marks. Yes, a LOT of work, but oh my how lovely the wall paint colors popped with all the trim now white. What a difference. Wood is classic, but when it looks tired and golden/yellow, it is a little depressing. White trim too is classic, and so refreshing and clean looking. Everything goes better with white! Hard work, but labor of love and great sense of accomplishment when you Do It Yourself.

By the way, I really how you have used a bench at your dining table. Takes some of the bulk away that chairs all the way around a table do, taking up so much space. Seeing this has given me the idea to do this in my kitchen. Was your bench once a 'piano bench'? Or where did you get it?

the bench was actually an inexpensive find at a local furniture store. It was all light pine color, painted legs to blend with other colors. I like how three small bodies (kids) can fit on one side where as if there were chairs...we'd be limited. Thanks for the compliments.
