Need help w/ kitchen

I need help! I want my kitchen to have a timeless, traditional look (on a budget of course!). I will be adding an island. Should I make the island the same color as the cabinets or use another color? What color should I paint the walls? And what color backsplash should I install? The floors seem so busy and are throwing me off completely! Any help is appreciated!

Hi Blair,

looking at your kitchen the first thing I notice that would make a dramatic change in your kitchen is simply installing a more substantial crown... even go as far as a stacked crown (2 member crown) the skimpy top molding is not in keeping with this traditional door style.
Of course some toe kick... looks like it has come or hasn't been installed.

As for the back splash. If you are keeping your present tops.. take off the granite splash
that is installed, and go to the deck with your tile... You need to narrow down the paint choice ... do you want a "color" as you have now or more neutral. Once you decide on a wall color you can work on the splash...

The space is plenty large for a nice island. Either the same color or cream would be nice.
The paint color will really help this selection as well. Once you get your island in... the floor won't seem so busy!

Consider a darker, more true gray color for the walls which provides a 'richer' feel against the cabinets.

I would do the island in the same finish as the cabinets.

"High end" and "traditional" are generally mutually exclusive. Maybe if you describe what "high end" and/or "traditional" mean to you, you'll get more focused feedback.

[Edit: hanna1984, I understand from where you're coming... a contemporary interpretation of "traditional"; not the historically accurate one. And that's the type of clarification for which I was asking of the OP'r. If the OP'r wants an historically accurate traditional kitchen (w/ modern appliances) it would be nothing like the very nice pics you posted.]

Open up the photos I posted. Do a search under Photos and use traditional kitchens as your criteria! :)

Hi there
I personally would do a richer less " pastel" like color on walls....paint lower cabinets dark..ie black and slap down a rich looking oriental rug pulling in hues of kitchen. Splash of Color on counters. Looks sleek to me...warm wood.

The wall color is making the floors stand out more. Paint the walls white or a warm neutral and you won't believe the difference. Then match the cabinets when you add an island and consider white subway tiles for your back splash.
