Is a box spring really necessary?

I purchased a new headboard and now I need a new mattress set and bed frame. I really like some of the frames that I see that are higher off of the floor, allowing you to store things under the bed. The description says that a box spring is not necessary. I am aware that sometimes if you do not purchase the box spring along with some mattresses, the warranty is voided. I don't think I really care about a warranty, but is a box spring truly necessary? I would not have a foam mattress--just a regular mattress.
