If your budget allows to put hardwood throughout, it would be the best option and will add value to the home. I generally do not like to bump different wood looking products up against each other. It seldom brings the look a client wants. However, if you have a small transition between the rooms (like a 32" doorway) then you can probably make it work. You can have sand and finish hardwood installed and work with the installer until you can match the color of the existing laminate.

Whatever you do, don't try to save a few bucks by buying your hardwood flooring from a big box store such as Home Depot, Lowes or Lumber Liquidators. The reason they can offer it as such a great price is because the wood isn't fully dried which will cause it to split, buckle and cup in your home. If you want to see what others have gone through with cheap hardwood [I assume it includes engineered hardwood as well as solid], google 'Lumber Liquidators, complaints' and you'll find dozens of horror stories about people's sad experience trying to save $2 sq ft.
