That's an amazing deck Dresser Homes. We love the utilization of Ipe coupled with the wood ceiling.

If it's not oiled- it would just silver right? The wood doesn't need any tretment to last a lifetime, this is what everyone claims at least, right?

Ipe, if not oiled, does turn silver. Since there really is no such thing as a maintenance free material, Ipe does require some maintenance. This maintenance includes sweeping and washing once in a while to prevent any dirt and debris build up.

Thankfully, Ipe doesn't require water sealing, or any other special additives to maintain its structural integrity.

Unfortunately we don't have a specific time-lapse of one particular deck, but attached are two videos of decks that we have visited that show different levels of graying. Hope this gives you a better idea of what Ipe can look like once it's left to patina

The Pacific Palisades, CA video has a deck that is grayed out and a fence that has had no oil, and has not been grayed out yet.

This St. Petersberg, FL is a pool deck that has been completely grayed out.

So, does the Ipe have to have spacers or can it be tongue and groove on a porch?

@vtussery Ipe for tongue and groove does not require a spacer but it does require it to be covered. The less sun and weather it sees the less movement it'll have.
