Need help with shutter colour!

I need to paint my shutters (and garage door to match) this spring as the paint is beginning to chip. The color right now is a beige/yellow. Any ideas on a different color? Keep it the same? Help!

A chocolate brown from the darker bricks for the shutters, an orange-y red from the bricks for the garage door would be an option.

You have a nice looking home. However, looking at the shutters on your home, it looks like the shutters don't belong on the large window close to the garage. There isn't enough room for properly sized shutters. Here are a couple of short but excellent articles with photos that show you why your home would actually look better without shutters on the right window and with properly sized and functional looking shutters on the left window. It will make a world of difference in your homes appearance as well as the colors suggested by apple_pie_order. I agree totally to recede the garage door by painting it the same color to blend with the bricks. Paint the remaining shutter a deep chocolate brown (espresso type) and paint your front door a bright, welcoming color. If you aren't as bold as that, then go with a glossy black door.

Denita, I completely see what you mean about the shutters! I never noticed before but you're right they don't seem to fit. I Love the idea of a glossy black door also.

Apple_pie_order, I'm not sure I have it in me to paint such a large surface area orange-y red!! What do you think about adding the garage door accessories (fake hinges and handles) to break up the solid area?

If you don't want to go with the brick color, you could have the garage door painted to look like a wood door. That way it blends into the house and your eye then automatically goes to the front door. :) Check with professional painters in your area. You would be surprised at how nice they look when done right.

I think the garage door looks fine as is. No need for fake additions, just a matter of personal taste. I'd spend more time and energy on the garden for summer. Again, it is just personal preference.

apple_pie, you don't like garage doors painted like wood???...lol...
We have to be careful here because it is so wet and humid (and the sun beats on the doors) so we have some pretty good painters and it is tough to tell until you get very close to the door. Wood doors here don't last long. But naturally real is usually a better choice than the look alike. :)

Real wood garage doors are incredibly heavy, especially if they get wet. I'd never get one again. Lovely lightweight aluminum is fine, strong steel reinforcement is good for windy areas. Fashions come, fashions go, if we all liked the same thing it would be boring.

Brittany, I would probably remove the shutters from the big window, right size the other one then paint the front door a burnt orange. Or black. Repaint a fresh coat of black on the wrought iron supports. Spruce up the landscape beds w new plants and mulch. Place a new black rocker on the front porch then have a seat. Ahhh.

linjen, I'd want to see what the landscaping looks like when it's not winter or spring or whenever this was - maybe it's really nice? Just thinking. Trees are bare in the background. I agree about the rocker - that would look great.

I always wish they would list the general location so we could take that into consideration. Dwarf Nandinas would be beautiful w their year round greenery and dark orange red berries. I also mostly use pine straw or dark mulch. It is a beautiful comfortable looking house. She's looking for ideas to be even more beautiful.

I think it's maybe southern Ontario (in Canada). Some cultivars may be hardy there. I'm in Calgary - they are definitely NOT hardy here. I googled them to see what they look like - they're beautiful!

Don't be afraid to paint your garage door in a colour similar to the brick -- it will look so much better. When done, the garage door won't be the highlight of your home and what people first notice when they look at it. Drive around the neighbourhood to check out what others have done.

Thanks for the great comments everyone! Yes, I live in southern Ontario. This picture was taken before we moved into the house, so we have definitely fixed up the landscaping since then.
