When you work with glitter paints or metallics they are very difficult to use. If you are doing a large flat surface you will probably need to hire a professional.

Tell me more about what you're wanting to do - a whole room, just one wall, what color, etc. My advice might change based on the nature of the project.

In general, though, there are two issues with doing a glitter finish:
1. regular glitter just disappears into paint and won't show up as sparkle.
2. techniques to get it to lay on the surface usually involve suspending the glitter in a transparent medium like glaze or polyurethane, or blowing the glitter onto a wet, freshly painted wall. The latter is quite messy, as you can imagine. But I hear that's the technique they used to create the glitter walls at Beauty Bar in Dallas. It also gives the most dramatic result, as the glitter covers heavily and lies on top without any varnish to mute it. But, without a protective coat, the glitter is also more prone to flaking off.

The few glitter projects I've done, I simply stirred a tube of glitter into a water-based clearcoat, preferably a semi-gloss finish to maintain maximum sparkle. Glitter will always show up best on a background that's darker than itself - so for example, a dark teal wall with turquoise glitter, or a charcoal wall with silver glitter. Once the base wall color is dry, you just mix fine craft glitter into the clearcoat and roll on. It may take several coats to get the desired effect.

It appears that they use a semi-transparent glaze to suspend the glitter, and it takes multiple coats to get the glitter mostly solid.

Finally, seems I heard once of a glitter additive that would NOT become coated by paint, but would somehow lie on the surface. I don't remember where it came from. If anyone knows what is is, I would love to hear about it myself.

It's for a bedroom. I saw on HGTV that they added something to the paint and it wasn't actual glitter flakes it was just a sparkling sheen. The color is a smokey purple.

Did you ever get your glitter wall done? I'm wanting to the same and am not sure how to go about it. I am using a metallic finish paint but want to give it a slight glitter boost, I know Valspar has a paint crystal that can be added to the paint but the reviews I've read are split right down the middle of horrible and wonderful. I'm also wondering if adding glitter additive to a metallic finish is going to make any difference At all or if it's just goin to get lost in the metallicness. Thoughts?
