Range hood size - match cooktop or go bigger?

We are remodeling our kitchen and adding a stainless steel range hood. The cooktop is 30", but my contractor is suggesting we use a 36" range hood because he thinks it will look better. Most of what i've seen/read says to match size of cooktop... so not sure if going to 36" makes sense or is a design faux pas. Thoughts?

    I can't really imagine why he would say that, but possibly it has something to do with the cabinets on either side of the hood. It is only three inches on each side, so it doesn't seem like a big deal either way. Try to pin him down on what he means by "looks better." Could be he just has an extra 36 incher laying around. LOL
