You have to dig out the root which is a pain in the butt. Do you have neighbors with teen or preteen boys who might be willing to do the digging for 20 bucks or so? My neighbors preteen has helped me with patching a privacy fence and was surprising good at it.

If you can cut them off at ground level, do so. There are products that will rot the remaining roots--it takes a few years. I did this and planted shorter plants around the stump.

I've pulled out a row of hedges with a Toyota car and chain - roots came up too! The larger issue was the SB5 rock that had been used as "mulch" under them. That took another two years to remove.

We had jungle in our yard that block windows and I just went after the with a big shovel then sawed or chopped off the roots that I couldn't move. You can drill into the stump and add nasty chemical to kill faster but covering it with dirt and mulch will let them rot over a couple seasons. Be sure to check the mature size of whatever you replant so they won't crowd the house. Good luck and plan for a good soak and a massage after being a "lumberjack " and take time planning how to landscape for low maintence.
