You could go in so many directions with that white space. I can picture hanging textiles, flags (state, international, nautical, whatever reflects your interests), signs, oars, some great blown-up and framed black and white photos (zoomed in images easily appreciated from below)....I could go on....

I'm an artist, and I have a lot of large art panels that I would love to see up there, but I think it's a bad idea to hang anything there. The empty space is beautiful with all the light coming through. To make the space comfortable and attractive, I'd keep the decoration at eye level and leave the rest airy. Hope this helps.
