We have a jacuzzi tub that has been used less than 6 times in 13 years and are considering remodeling the master bath to remove the tub and change the shower into a large walkin shower. Do you think this is a good idea or will we regret this decision when it comes time for re-sale? Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions.

We did this last summer! We took out the jacuzzi, put in a GORGEOUS walk-in shower with a 3/4 height wall and three shower heads - no door. On the outside of the door, we put an oval-shaped freestanding soaker tub. The wall itself is curved around the tub, and covered in glass tile. I have attached a picture of the view from above. The best part of our remodel -- where the old, small shower was, we put in a second washer/dryer combo. So now we can do laundry right in our master suite!

I have no idea when or WHY those tubs became de rigueur, but I absolutely loathe them. Have been turned off from buying places because I know the first order of business would be to rip that out. Please, go ahead and remove it! Cannot tell you how glad I will be when that trend ends!!!

We are doing the same thing. You actually have to step into our tub to open the windows or pull up the blinds! Our remodeler supports this, and believes that large jacuzzi tubs were an 80's fad. I have never used it, because we have an outdoor hottub. I am actually keeping the shower the same size, and putting a chaise lounge in the tub space, because our master bath is large, has big windows and great light, and I like to read in there if my husband is asleep first! As far as resale, I think you will be fine, especially if you have a bathtub in another bathroom for buyers who have small children. We did this in our last home also (replaced tub/shower combo with shower) and our house sold in three days.

Don't worry about resale value- any update on an older bathroom will outweigh the possibility of someone liking that tub. Love the space for you! If it's over 10 years old, it looks dated anyway. Like everyone above- get rid of it. If it is in half decent shape- try and sell it before sending it to the landfill- or give it away to someone who will love it!

An idea on if you get rid of the tub, try Habitat for Humanity Re-Store. Goes for a good cause.

Our jacuzzi tub went to Habitat. We were shocked they were able to get that behemoth out of the house in one piece, but they did, and all the electrical still worked on it. AND we got a small tax write off for it.

Whirlpool tubs are so trendy. My clients would rather have a big shower. If you have to have a tub, try a free standing slipper tub. It makes the room look so much larger. Clients of today would rather have a steam shower with a seat. And lots of glass. Good luck on the remodeling!

Personally, I think not having a bathtub in a master bathroom is a definite negative to potential home buyers. However, I totally understand that more and more people would rather invest in walk in showers. How about if you install just a regular non jacuzzi tub? Something super basic but still serves the purpose and will complete the look.

When you design your shower, consider adding some custom art tile. You can even add something sensual if you like. Here is an example of a single tile I made for someone's shower. If the digital image is high enough quality and resolution I can scale it to virtually any size on an array of tiles. This is kiln-fired so it's easy to clean and will hold up well to all cleaning solutions. It's OK to use sanded grout during installation. I would avoid dye sublimation tiles for this application, because they will scratch easily and the image will eventually degrade!

Hi cpoese, what did you decide to do? Would love to see some photos. We are in this exact same situation.

Would someone who has taken out a Jacuzzi and installed a shower in its place, tell me what the cost was? I am thinking of buying a house 900 miles away and it has a neat bathroom on the main floor, except the Jacuzzi no longer works and is just taking up space! Knowing what costs I may have in advance of making an offer will help me decide if I can afford to buy this house. Thanks so much!

Does anyone happen to know the estimated cost of removing a jacuzzi tub and/or surrounding tile? I'm sure varies depending on the home and location, but any estimate would be very helpful. I am looking at buying a home where this is a must and would like to factor in the cost. If anyone has a good source for claw foot tubs that would be wonderful as well. Thank you!

I'm in the process of purchasing a house and it has a jacuzzi in the master bedroom. We would like to replace it with a standing shower. Anyone know of the estimated cost?

iwe are going to remove jacuzzi, but we can’t enlarge the shower unless windows are removed in the bay.. it has double shower heads and a seat. So should a free standing tub be added or not for 2020?

So many variables to consider before pricing out removal of a jacuzzi tub and installing a shower. Pricing will be all over the place due to so many factors.

I think that it would be best to just clean it up and let those buying the house make the decision.
