Oak furniture needs to stay. Would love ideas! Colors, decor, window treatment. I love sunlight. Help me update and modernize our farm house. Suggestion, please.

Get new, colorful bedding and paint the walls one of the colors from the bedding.

I cannot really tell what the tall piece is near the foot of the bed, but it looks like it is taking up space right there for walking and moving around, closing in the bedside table, too. Will it fit behind the door at all? I usually am not a fan of angled furniture, but if doing that would make it work if it does not fit flat on the wall, I would love to see if that would be a better fit for it.

You have a neutral color on the walls, so find a great comforter and shams and then get curtains or drape panels to go with it. Try a pattern for the bed with a solid for the windows.

I agree that bedding you love should come first then accessorize and paint from that.

This is the other angle of our bedroom. I feel like our walls are bare. But if I put something on the wall it can't be centered above the bed and will look dumb. Ideas please!

Do you have a closet the dresser could fit in to free up that wall? Also, what would you think about taking the mirror off the lower dresser and maybe the tv could go there instead?

I had to do something similar and ended up with a great result with no new furniture. Here's how. Get a new headboard. They have so many great inexpensive ones now. Go to wayfair.com. Get cloth so you break up all the wood. Just get a cheap bed frame to attach if your current one doesn't work. That would be my starting point as far as what bedspread, pillows,, sheets, curtains and wall paint to get. Get rid of the mirror on the dresser and just get a nice rectangular mirror. The finish could be whatever works but don't try to match the wood. It should contrast something else in the room. Get a chunkier lamp. Maybe with some bling to it. You have great bones. It's all about the accessories. Good luck!

Closets are a rare gem. One closet in the whole house when I moved in 33 years ago. One very small closet to the right of the mirrored dresser. We have added small closets in other bedrooms. :)

Totally understand. Are you willing to take off the foot board to get rid of a little of the wood right there together then? And, yes, getting rid of the mirror will be an instant update. If you NEED and USE a mirror, a wall hung one will be ok. If not, ART!

Never thought about removing headboard or footboard since we only bought it 3 years ago. :) Removing mirror? I'm open too all of these things. I saw a group on pottery barn that I liked but don't know how to attach so I can get imput.

If your furniture was mine, these are the things I would consider. First off, what is going on in the area by the window? Is that area indented and a bench there? What is that dark rectangle on the floor in front of dresser? To update, I would remove mirror, possibly hang tv there or above chest of drawers, hang white 2" wood blinds, remove foot board (it's taking up a lot of visual space in the room, and I probably would trade out handles on furniture with a more updated look. Sorry. Handles look old-fashioned to me. These are things I personally would try.

Oh, and chunkier, more updated lamps.

Was a closet with a window. Had mold problems, so took off door and put a fake leather bench in it.
Where dresser with mirror is was a fireplace we tore out. Had the dresser made to fit in opening. Then made a closet to the right of dresser. Black square on floor is a grate to let heat come upstairs. There was no furnace when I moved in.

Of course, find some bedding you love, and some pretty pillows.

    Lamp suggestions?
Like pottery barn Cynthia Palampore duet cover. Would need duet cover first. :) Guess I'm trying to steer away from blues, since that is all I seem to use in this room.
But doesn't that have a lot of blue in it?
I love curvy, chunky mercury glass lamps with barrel shades, but not sure that goes with your style of furniture.
Ha,ha! Went back and looked at it. All I saw were the other colors. Which I do not know what to call them. Seeeee I need help. Lol
  • 12 years ago
Are you considering painting the walls? If you go with that bedding, a real, real pale blue would be cool and calming, but if you want to steer away from blue, then I hope one of the color experts will join in here and help. Some are real good to do room mockup suggestions using Photoshop.
Yes I want to paint. Definitely want to update our bedroom to something beautiful rather than boring!!
I've had pale blue walls in the past. Somewhat afraid of dark, deep colors.
Yes, That was the bedding I thought I liked it, or am I still acting old fashion?
That bedding, in my humble opinion, doesn't necessarily look old fashioned. It's all the heavy wood furniture. You considering any of the suggestions previously made?
No, I think it is good choice for your style.
I agree w Abby in removing the mirror and footboard, and also think the closet redoux could use attention. It would be a nice spot for wallpaper, and adding a small vanity or writing table. Is that something you would consider?
Yes, remove mirror and footboard. Haven't looked for a different headboard because I'm lost on that topic. Can you tell I've been stuck in matchy, matchy. :)
    I'm wanting change!
Is there room in the armoire for the tv at the foot of the bed? Would love to see a chair where the mirror is by the armoire.
I think you could start with just removing foot board. Otherwise, you will have to consider other furniture as you try to figure out a different head board. I love padded, tufted linen type headboards, but don't know if that's the direction you would want to go with the other furniture.

    Hi.

I'm willing to help out. I will say one thing - your design has to be thought of as a whole. If you don't take a planned approach to this project, it could end in disaster. So, feel free to contact me. My contact information is on my profile.

    Thanks

The bedding you have chosen fits a farmhouse beautifully, as does the bed. I think the issue is the scale of the dressers and the mirror. If you think your walls need something, maybe do a feature wall at the head of your bed to ease into some colour.
Could the highboy fit behind the door? That might free up the path to the bed and balance that space.
Hope to remove footboard and mirror on dresser this weekend.
The tv will not fit in armoire.
Good to hear. I hope you like the start. Did you decide about the bedding?
I tried to order a fabric sample of the duet above. It's on back order until, I think the 22nd.
I'm going out on a limb here by asking if your partial to staining your furniture a deeper color. It would give a more modern feel. And also removing the footboard and adding a square area rug will add texture and color. Then
