We used chalkboard paint. Rustoleum makes a primer and paint that will give you a magnetic chalkboard surface. All the walls in this house are textured so we had the painter mud and sand the walls (2x) to achieve a smooth surface. Then he primed and painted with the chalkboard paint. If you already have smooth walls, then you can go straight to priming and painting! Good luck
