Personally, I hate the look of ceiling fans over dining tables, though I suppose in sweltering climates they have their purpose.

The question is why does he want to replace the chandelier with a ceiling fan- simply for looks or for function? I personally do not care for a ceiling fan above a dining room table but if he needs to move some air around the room- why not...it's his house.

Yeah-- sure it's his house, but this is why mothers are here, so they can stop their kids from making stupid mistakes. :)

As an aside, I think a fan gives people more of an excuse to keep stuffing their faces. They'll be cooler, so they'll feel like it's okay to keep stuffing themselves. You know how you see people eat in the summer, sometimes, and they're sweating the whole time they're eating? It's enough to put you off your own food-- so maybe he's like that, and prefers to eat and not sweat at the same time. I think it's better just to bite the bullet and crank up the old air-conditioner.

I'm kind of torn. It's his house, so he should do what he wants to do, but keep the chandy, because when he goes to sell, he will need to replace it.

Yarbro, yes my son knows I am on Houzz. We both use this site a lot and since we are both usually either in the midst of or planning some remodeling we toss a lot of ideas around.

If it were my house...I wouldn't replace the chandelier with a fan...if it were my sons house and he did it I would just roll my eyes and suggest he puts the chandelier in the attic in case he ever wants to sell the place...
