How should I create my couch/dining table next to living room?

We just bought a new house. The area I'm showing is the area where we'll be putting a dining room and likely some couches next to it, as the area is HUGE.

I'm really in love with the idea of having a couch and a 6-person table in the dining room, like in my pins: http://www.pinterest.com/rachelrofe/kitchen-ideas/

And then I think on the side next to the dining room table, we'll need some couches to make it cozy. The entire area along the back wall is 22 feet and 4 inches. The sides of the areas are 17 ft 10 inches and 17 foot and the kitchen is right in front of it.

I want to make the area look modern with clean lines, yet cozy.

Do you think I should make the table horizontal or vertical? And do you have any ideas of how I can lay everything out to fit my aesthetic?

Also - what colors do you think would open the place up? I don't think I want to get a dark wood table as it's already kind of dark in there... but I don't think glass would look good, and we may rent this out sometime so I don't love white... I have no idea!

Thank you!!
