I have heard many different opinions on this and am curious what others have to say. I would definitely replace the shiny brass. I had to do that in my house and there was a lot of it! I used nickel because I liked it and we have no intention of selling, so I didn't have to worry about what others liked. It seems to have lasted a lot longer than other finishes. I like the oil rubbed bronze, but I think it will become outdated before long. What is an alternative finish you are considering?

I am sure if you replace the hardware that the door hinges are also the same finish and might stand out more unless they were painted over.

I would select something that is pretty general looking and not too pricey since it will add $0 to the selling price. Unless you go with something very stylish and "designer" looking some home buyers will change it anyway once they move it. Fresh coat of paint in all the rooms is money well spent too. Good luck!

I don't think you should replace the brass before selling. Keep an option open to offer some $$ reduction if that's a must have for new homeowners. Brass is definitely back in!!! Prove that to yourself - visit some lighting showrooms.

Yes, brass is making a comeback, but it has to be done correctly and decorated around correctly, typically in an industrial or turn-of-the-century type design. If you don't feel that fits, I would certainly recommend updating the finish for resale value. You could leave it undone at the beginning of your house being on the market, but I wouldn't take the risk of it being a turn-off to buyers and potentially lose money by having the house sit on the market too long.

A cost effective option for updating the finish is time-consuming, but would be gentler on your budget. You can actually spray paint your fixtures in a metal-rated metallic spray paint that you can find pretty easily and cost-friendly at nearly any hardware store. I would recommend roughing up the fixtures with sandpaper before painting, otherwise the paint won't adhere.

Nickel is still a very relevant finish, so I think it's a safe bet if that's the finish you want to go with.

chrome is making a big comeback. it was always the best seller in Europe. with the shift in the US market towared more contemporary design, there is a path to move away Ss/BN. its important to select the right company that makes nice and high end looking chrome. lookt at Grohe, thier belient chrome is fantastic. really brightens up the room and adds the bling effect.

I have heard about brass! But I'm not wanting to venture that way yet. Were doing a new build, and I think I'm going Oil Rubbed Bronze. I would NOT put in the money to fix that before selling. That may appeal to someone, and if it doesn't the buyer will change it themselves. It's kind of a known when buying a home.... sometimes you have to change paint and fixtures. Instead of changing hardware- just maybe do a little fresh paint, stage, and pick up all the clutter. Good luck!
