Looking for honest opinions on vinyl plank flooring.

I need to rip up the old laminate on the main floor of my 1952 bungalow and need to stick with a floating floor. I've heard good things about vinyl plank (looks like wood) but am not knowing if it is cheesy....please let me know any thoughts on this. I may be selling in the next few years and don't want anything that will lessen the value. I'd appreciate any thoughts

Where are you going to put it? I put some travertine looking vinyl planks in a laundry room and loved it, very durable and I was happy with it, plus it was really cheap. I'm not sure about the wood looking stuff, I have a hang up with fake wood, no matter how good it looks it's still fake and doesn't feel right, plus refinished engineers aren't that expensive anymore. If you are thinking of putting it in a kitchen, there is something to say about the fact that it's more durable than real wood. Apparently I'm okay with fake travertine, I think I'm just weird.

We did our entire home in the vinyl plank after we saw it used in a local hospital. First, we have grandchildren and I thought if it looked that good in the hospital from all the traffic, that is what I wanted. We got the commercial grade and used the glue the manufacturer recommended and we did it ourselves. The people we bought it from would let us borrow the roller as we did the house room by room on weekends, etc. Looks like hand scraped wood. I could hose this place out if I needed to. One downside. It is right on concrete in our home as we are on slab. There is no cushion so if standing bothers you in kitchen get a cushioned rug. That is true with tile as well. Be careful babies falling and hitting head as well. My husband widened a doorway and did not smooth an indentation in concrete very well and when the light hits the floor it is noticeable, so be sure to have a smooth floor

My daughter put it in her house and loves it. Every time I visit I am jealous of her floors. Mine are real wood and a REAL pain to keep up. Her are so easy to clean and she has had them for about 4 years now and with 2 kids and NO scratches - I think the flooring is amazing.

I have them in my lower level because the dogs come in and out from the dog rum, in our main level we put a laminate the looks and feels like slate I love it and both floors are easy to look after. The pics are of the slate stuff.

Thanks so much for the feedback everyone! Patricia ~ you have a beautiful house!
Cinar Interiors...I checked the website - but I live in Canada and their products aren't available here. Think that I will let go my thing about fake wood and just go for it. It's a difficult decision as these products are pretty new up here and I don't want to take a wrong turn on the entire main floor of my house! Thanks again!

I try to steer people away from vinyl products whenever possible. Vinyl (and it's manufacturing process) are bad for the environment and bad for people. You may want to look into what people have said about vinyl flooring and other vinyl products. Here are a couple of short pages which you may want to read. If you want more information, there's plenty of it online. I also recommend people watch the documentary "Blue Vinyl" [available via Netflix] - the story of one woman's inquiry into the manufacturing of vinyl siding in order to persuade her parents to use a different material on their house. It's an education. Whether it's flooring or siding, it's still vinyl.

Thank you very much Linda....I did NOT know all of this and the articles were very informative. I am going to look to see about marmoleum plank flooring. I had looked at marmoleum earlier and it was the cost of it that was the issue for me. Just out of my price range altogether. That was for the full sheets though and I hadn't realized that it was available in plank and clic together. Do you now of places that sell it so that I could check it out? I live in Canada.

I saw a condo where the seller had covered over a cracked ceramic tile floor with this stuff. Done improperly, for sure. Pop, pop, pop, everywhere you walked. I've seen good jobs too, but I would use a real hardwood for a main living area.

We had a laminate tile flooring in a great room/kitchen in a house in Michigan. It held up well with two big dogs and two little kids. I believed it was a floating floor, but it was installed by previous owners. It looked just like tile and made for a softer landing on feet, heads, and glassware.

Beautiful when we first installed it. Less than a year later it is turning aqua green. Horribly dissapointing. Do not make our mistake. Avoid it.
