You have the perfect opportunity to do a design that I recently came across & love!!
Because of the windows in the room the side table looks awkward but you have plenty of room to slide the bed forward & have a thick shelf like bed head behind it on which you can place lamps etc like this photo.

Agreed, a piece of art work would help 'finish' that wall space.

I agree that choosing lighter/brighter colors and patterns for your bedspread/comforter/drapes will help create an uplifting, fresh space. For warm brown tones and neutrals try incorporating greens/blue greens.

Love those colors. Wish I could find something that would go with my drapes. Had them made .

Why not put the hope chest on the long wall with the chair and then just a painting or mirror above it? If not a small desk or vanity in the same location?

All your stuff is nice and the room should look more beautiful than it does. I think color is one of the main problems. The tones and colors are all too similar causing everything to blend together. So you are lacking contrast and interest.

PS. I did not mean to put an "!" after the word shutters. That was supposed to be a "?" But I am glad you like the idea.

Looking at your other pics I see the room is gray not green. The gray is a nice color (so is green). I guess it's just very difficult to judge color from a picture.

I think changing up the bedspread and possibly drapes, and adding a rug over your rug would make a huge difference. Move the wood chest, and perhaps add an upholstered bench. Hang the tv over the skinny dresser.

Door: replace with solid wood, two or three flat panel, 4"-5" wide fluted trim, and a crystal door knob or French-handled lever. IMO.

I may get rid of the tv. We never watch it. Would love to have plantation shutters.

My curtains don't hang correct because my air vents are under the windows. :(

Another thing you might consider - when you decide on bedding, you can put a coordinating blanket on top of the chest and pillow on top of that. It would break up all the wood at the end of the bed. Might work.

Also two 28" euro shams on the bed. That would also break up the look of a lot of wood and lighten it up.

The furniture is pretty. It's just that so much of that gorgeous wood is a little monotonous.

I really liked the Tommy Bahama white/green leaf bedspread. Going with something like that would move the room toward a more eclectic feel. For some reason I'm thinking of those old Grange furniture ads with the large heavy furniture mixed with island/tropical staging....
It would let your large furniture be large without giving it an overly traditional "English" vibe....

This is on a grand scale, but I think you can replicate the look in your room. Instead of the FP and mirror, you could use a floor mirror on the wall where the chair is, floating the chair in front of it with a table and lamp that are in scale with the chair. Remove the mirror from your dresser and add a large piece of art above it. Have a custom bedspread made that works with your drapes and have a border of the fabric added to your drapes so you can raise them all the way up. Chandelier to replace the fan, upholstered piece to replace the hope chest, large rug to go 1/3 to 1/2 under the bed. Here is a Sherwin Williams "read" on the colors you might use. Left side for the basics and right for some accents.

The first thing I would do is to change the bedspread to something brighter. I really like the room that Sian posted I think that would work well in your room.

the room looks big, there are so much empty space, maybe you need to add some more chairs or another side table. and i guess the lighting is not perfect for your decoration style, maybe tiffany lamps, or wooden lamps is better.

Is a new wall color an option? I think a slight aqua blue would be lovely against your draperies. The entire room in blue and the wall behind the bed slightly darker. And as others have mentioned, lighter bed linens to contrast with the dark wood of your furnishings.

I like that blue. The bad thing is we painted not that long ago. I guess I can tell the hubby to get his paint brush out again. Lol

Are you keen to keep the carpet and the curtains. The bed spread is dark, the carpet blends in with the curtains. A shiny lamp (i.e.: Crystal or silver base) with a low sheen shade, new carpet/floor boards if possible with a large rug, a hanging ceiling light would be the most cost effective instant change at this stage, if you are to keep the furniture. This seems to be a fairly large space:) however by keeping the furniture, it would be difficult to make drastic changes. I also feel panels above the bed head and your long wall without a picture would add depth. These are generally inexpensive and can be painted. See link - Good luck....

I would suggest hanging a graphic quilt on the blank wall above the bed. You can also use dark colored curtains and drapes for your bedroom for a warm and cozy feel which forms the essence of the idea of a bedroom.

Plantations look good in photos but not sure I'd like living with them. Are you considering curtains with them or simply shutters? IMO, they tend to drive the design in a more streamlined direction. You have an elegant, antique style bed, but if you're replacing it and going simpler, they'd work.

Plantations are a whole new direction design-wise.
