    - The mantel shelf appears to be of the same natural material as the hearth extension, probably bluestone like the rest.

    Frequently the mantels and hearth are made from the similar material. I am guessing they used 2 1/4" rock faced limestone. Installing a deep stone mantel gets a pit tricky due to the weight. The result is short shelf depth. Just make sure the stone mantel is supported properly.
