Agree with Rosecottagehome. Pretty much mentioned everything I would have mentioned. Some additional ideas for a "rustic" look. You can add small hooks under your top cabinets to hold your cups (if your cups are similar; or if you color coordinate them by it will help it look organized).



Other than the accent color that rosecottagehom mentioned, you can also buy jars (make sure you buy the same ones); to line them up and put your coffee, rice, cereal, etcs in. I see you have quite a number of various jars and containers. The key is uniformity... Try to stick with the same accent color; same jars; etc. It'll make the clutter seem more organized.

I would also say, if you want to take it up another notch... To only have 3 base colors throughout your kitchen (and whatever's on display). And then you pick your 1 or 2 accent colors. You can allow any of these 5 shades in your kitchen. And you don't let any other colors touch the surface of your kitchen besides these colors! I mean, you can pick more accents, I guess.. it depends on your taste... but sticking with it will prevent random colors from popping in and cluttering it up.

Great advice to remove as much as possible. Also, don't put anything on top of the cabinets -- it's not really an area you want to draw attention to. Perhaps add some under cabinet lighting.

Just to add my opinion - you've got a great space to work with and I love everyone else's suggestions!
I works consider possibly removing the single cupboard above your peninsula bench. It would open up the room massively. Then if you can, space your pendants out some more.
Perhaps a rustic clock in it's position.

Thanks for the great suggestions everyone!! I love the thought of removing the single cupboard! That space below there is wasted space. I was going to 'tidy' up before posting but figured I would give the actual picture. I like the accent colors throughout as well as the hooks below the cupboard. Any suggestions for some sort of drape/curtain for the window? I feel so much more could be done with that window.

I have to have something above the cabinets. It makes it look worse when it is empty even if the counters are somewhat clear.

If you have to put items above your cupboards, it could be a few pottery pieces in your accent colors and/or items to help set a rustic mood, a jug, a few plates displayed, a large bowl, a rustic lantern, some antique items. Just a few things. I would not do artificial plants, as they get dusty and harder to clean than hard sided items that can be washed. As well, the artificial plants above give the kitchen a more dated look. Some examples of things to put up, green jug displayed here on counter, etc. See what you may have around the house. Try to make the pieces all relate to eachother in that the colors co-ordinate, they are rustic in design. Be careful not to over do above, the finished look should blend in to the over all look, not overwhelm it or look cluttered. Think of it as art on display compared to storage.

A roman shade valance is a suggestion for your window. They are not hard to make and this would allow you to choose any color with a pattern in it. They could be even fashioned from a fabric table cloth. The window covering as I see it in your room with a few accent pieces will be your biggest bump up of color and style you could bring into your kitchen. They would help set the tone, so to speak. I attached an example of a roman shade in green, but a fabric store will have much to pick from.
