Living room/ Fireplace mantle

I'm buying furniture for my living room and I can't decide what to do with my fireplace mantle. I need to put a TV down stairs and above the mantle makes the most sense. My dilemma is should I also put a painting above my tv to fill the rest of the space that will be left open. As you can see there and indentation of about one foot.
