We have designed a urinal in a man cave space for a Client, but I wouldn't want one in the powder room.....

Thanks for the comments - I would be interested in knowing the reason why so many people think they do not belong in a family home. I get it that they aren't favored, but I'm still not quite sure the reasoning. Our powder room is clean and fresh even after large gatherings, when in prior homes without a urinal the toilet and area around the toilet would always be a mess after a few males used it during a large gathering. We entertain a lot, so accommodating the males who prefer to use a urinal seems like a very sensible thing. But I am aware that a lot of women just don't like the way they look. (Ours is an egg-shaped Toto that hangs on the wall, surrounded by tile on the wall, in a slightly recessed area of the powder room.) If we it had a lid, would it be more acceptable to those of you who find them distasteful? (I'm not trying to be argumentative - I really want to know because we have our house for sale, and are planning to install one in our next house too.)

It is an interesting debate. There seems to be a visceral hatred of a urinal by (mainly) women. Is it because it IS associated with a public urinal so what can be classy about that? That powder rooms are usually glammed up but urinals are not. Lid issue? Maybe the height? Particularly if the toilet is lower? I too am intrigued, although also guilty of the same distaste. There are some fun designs out there..Yes I installed one for my husband off his office and he is delighted with it.

You should have asked about a bidet first. They are more pretentious :)

After living in Europe more than once, I agree with Fred. A bidet would be the best choice!

Unless there is a redesign of the current models, there is no lid to close on a urinal. Not hygienically or esthetically appealing.

Actually, there are a few urinals with lids, which could be closed before flushing, thus just as hygienic as a toilet that is flushed with the lid down.

I haven't seen that style of urinal, but I'm glad to know someone designed it. Still.....in most households it would require extensive retraining.

Yes - do a Google search of "Urinal with lid" and look at the images - there are many from which to choose. The urinal in our guest bath is MUCH easier to clean than a toilet, and very easy too keep spotless and sanitary. Our male guests have often expressed their appreciation, and during large gatherings (we entertain a lot) the toilet area stays much cleaner than in our previous home without a urinal; having a urinal and a toilet is more hygienic than having only a toilet.

Here's why I hate the idea of a urinal in a residential bathroom:

1. I hate toilet seats and covers left up and a urinal is up all the time

2. No matter how well designed a urinal is and how efficient the rinsing system is, the inside gets covered with urine. I worked a as a janitor in a factory one summer when I was in high school and, trust me, they are absolutely disgusting inside.

3. They smell. There's a reason why many public bathrooms use disinfectent cakes inside the urinals.

The people who think it's OK to have a urinal in their residential bathroom are probably the same people who make an industrial size open trash can the center piece of their kitchen because "It's so much more convenient."

There are now some very water-stingy dual-flush toilets (such as Toto Aquia), so the need for a urinal to save water disappears.

Not quite right - you cannot compare the state of urinals in public restrooms with ones that are installed in private homes. Ours does not smell, the wash system does a very good job of removing all traces of urine, water remains in the trap so no odors from waste system, and we do not have an industrial size open trash can in the center of our kitchen.

jagood -- having a urinal and toilet is NOT more hygenic as you claim. There is no way to flush your Toto urinal and have it remove all traces of urine (as you claim) without using a lot of water at high pressure and that has the effect of aerosolizing the mixture and spreading it all over your bathroom.

I guess it's good for lazy people who don't want to clean the bathroom often.

I think women who object to urinals are just insensitive to the needs of men.
