Need help with my full-sun garden

We moved into this house 3 years ago. We have a hedge (burning bush) along the driveway, a large poplar-type tree (dianthus around it), a lilac tree and a black currant bush (maybe this was a mistake). Then there are 2 borders along the front of the house. I had hoped for a cottage-style garden with a mix of perennials in there. Unfortunately, my husband and I don't share the same taste in gardens. He thinks the plants look messy and keeps pulling them up 'accidentally' while weeding. I can't keep him out of there. (I've lost a thistle, 3 sweet williams, some primrose and a coneflower.) I am thinking of using some box hedges along the house to hide the ugly concrete base. I have always wanted a vine, hence the trellis, but I haven't found one that has thrived there yet. It's a full sun garden. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated! We're going to need a marriage counsellor or a garden consultant! We are in Nova Scotia if that helps. Zone 5b.
