Cooktop replacement - what are the cut out dimensions all different?!?

We are designing our new kitchen And have decided on induction. We currently have a downdraft electric jennair cooktop which we bought a few years ago when the previous one got "fried" by a power surge. When we replaced it, because the cutout size was different than required for the new one ( and we couldn't ind another that would drop in) we then had to have a chunk of unmatched counter installed to accommodate the new cooktop. So we are getting a cambria quartz counter that will be custom cut for whatever we get -
But what happens when our exciting new cooktop eventually fails?!?! We've researched 4 brands of "36"" induction cooktops and they vary in cut out dimensions by 1/2"
To 1 1/2 " . WHY!?! How do you deal with this? are we forced into a slide in range? Help!

Okay we are based in the UK so things may differ quite allot, but a majority of hobs that we sell (sorry for the metric) when we go up to the 900mm (or 36") are generally 850mm width and 475/490 depth on the cutout. What you will probably find is that the cut out is only an indication of what size the hob actually is as there is often allot of over hang on the top of the hobs. This is always tricky and what I would say is do the research on the particular hobs you like and go for the one with the best reviews so it doesn't malfuction in only two years!

You would need to find one with a similar cutout. I am currently dealing with this issue right now. I wish there was a website where one could search for cutout dimensions only. I have found my clients a Viking cooktop that has the same specs but they want black, not SS. If the cutout needs to be slightly larger, then I am having my granite fabricator out to recut. But they will only cut and rework old granite tops at no liability. That means, if it cracks or chips in any way, they are not held responsible. I understand this. It is a big risk.

My only other suggestion to you and others? Is buy a second cooktop and store it in the attic.
