Hi agourdine, I think a greyish rug would provide more versatility if you get tired of the purple.

I'd hold off on buying a rug. I do not think it will help your bedroom much. Center the bed on the wall and move night tables slightly away from the bed. Keep 2 of the pillows you have and buy one pillow to place in front. Repeat the color of the headboard in this pillow, either a print or something like this (but in purple) ALSO buy a purple glass vase for one night table and a purple something else (book, frames, figurine) for the other night table. Think of having something over the headboard OR MIRRORS over the night tables

J222b thanks for the feedback. A few things, 1. I'm adding a seating area on the left, where the leaning mirror is currently located, and that's why the bed and nightstands are not centered on the wall. 2.I'm not sure if you can tell by the picture, but the headboard is about 7 feet tall, so it doesn't make sense to add anythinig on top of that. 3. No chachkies on the nightstands, so no purple vases or mirrors. This room has to be pretty and functional, so I usually don't like add pieces that will collect dust.

A seating area will be nice. I keep my night tables completely clear, too, although it often is a good idea to carry the accent color (purple) to the left and right of the bed, but not to the chairs. From here the headboard looks dwarfed by the wall but that must be an illusion. Nice bedroom.

Your high velvet headboard screams glamour - so I'd play it up! I would choose wider night tables to balance the height of the headboard and I would make them mirrored so they add a reflective quality to the room (not sure the current mirror on the side does much for the room - just adds more unbalanced height - you need width I think). I would use large print wallpaper on the side of the wall the bed is on since you can't really add art above it - but make it a kind of tone on tone grey neutral wallpaper for small contrast (your tone might just be same colour but shiny print (like this print - just grey, not greenish http://purdywallcovering.blogspot.com/2009/11/pink-saturday_21.html). I would add a picture to the side of an upholstered chair (and make it soft with white matt). A chandelier above the bed - either crystal for glamour or maybe a capiz shell one to pick up on the purples and help tie other colours together. Rug would be fairly soft and neutral with some capiz colours if you choose that chandelier, otherwise, maybe a rug that plays off the large wallpaper print - similar pattern, but tone on tone. What do you think?

Thanks for the feedback, emahr. I'm not a big fan of wallpaper, but everybody is alluding to adding some sort of color to the wall to make it stand out. So I'm thinking I might make the headboard wall and paint it a darker gray.

Dramatic long drapes would suit this room's scale, what's on your window?

This designer carried the purple to chairs and window tx. I think it's too much for my taste, but we're all different & this room *does* make a memorable statement
I'd probably do the chairs in gray b/c the the bench fabric and duvet have gray (at least from here, or is it beige?) Do you have to tie in any color of window treatments or anything in the master bath? Drape different fabrics on a chair and live with them a bit, before you decide. You can always drape a purple, or dark gray throw / pillow on the chair if you feel another touch or depth of color is needed in the seating area.
If white / cream I would at least cover chairs a darker color than bed and lamp shades, so the bed is the diva of the room.

Thanks, 14thstreet, I need some drapes. I'm think pinch-pleated gray/silver silk drapes. Because of budget constrains, those will have to be the last thing on my list :-)

j222b, yes, the duvet cover has some gray in it, and (not that you can see from the pic) I have a gray/silver quilt on the bed to tie with the duvet. And yes, too much purple is not up my alley...nor my husband's :-) No other color in the master bath yet; we are still deciding what color we should paint the walls.

No offense to j222b, but I don't really think bringing in more purple will work at all. The headboard has enough. Work with adding grays and find a print that is mostly gray with just the slightest tiny touch of purple in it -- it is NOT a color that you are going to like forever, I'm just saying. So don't invest more money in the purple. I LOVE the idea above about wallpapering that back wall behind the headboard, you could even go bold. If you don't want to go that extreme, however (wallpaper is hard to remove later), then just play up making a sitting area like you mentioned. Don't hang anything over the nightstands, the lamps already do enough there. I don't mind the mirror propped up at all, if it can be worked into the sitting area, but maybe you're planning to hang it, I don't know. I could go either way on that. Find a painting, and it doesn't even have to have purple in it to match -- just neutrals that go with the rest of the room. Think less "matchy-matchy" and you'll be fine.

a rug that has the main color of dark taupe might help. but not critical, the carpet is fine.

j222b, the walls are painted a light gray. In out last place, the bedroom the walls were painted this metallic silver fom Ralph Lauren; however, the room was much smaller.

Catnip, I agree with you, I'm trying to stay away from the purple since most likely I'll get tired of it down the road. In a few year, most likely, I'll reupholster the headboard and change the color scheme, but I'd like to work with what I got....a bunch of neutrals, like you stated.

So, as of now, the mirrow will be leaning on the wall; it's too heavy to hang. The sitting area will be on the left with one or two chairs, a table and, maybe, a floor lamp. I'll try to get a gray rug...maybe trellis rug or maroccan one. The pillows will be changed to something lighter and more modern (again, those were remnants from the last place). Artowork...sigh...we shall see what I can find.

No more purple is necessary! I want to be clear that I love purple and I love love love the headboard. But let the headboard "pop" more by not littering the room with more touches of purple. I don't understand why everyone else seems to think you need a touch of purple here & there. You really don't. The coolest room I ever saw was when a designer did the whole room in varying shades of neutral gray ... then Bam, there was one chair that gave a loud hit of very bright turquoise. No other turquoise anywhere in the room. It was amazing.

Catnip, I totally agree with you. I'm not putting anymore purple anywhere except the headboard and replacing the purple pillows that are already there.
