I had the same problem! When I added a rug in front of my sink and a set of three canisters with my accent colors - it really helped! Your kitchen is very nice and will be beautiful!

I would pull a color from the back splash for the walls and also use a color on the ceiling to warm up the space. Patterned window treatments will also help.

Thanks! I thought the white quartz looked contemporary - didn't think about the slate backsplash. Can't replace backsplash - not anytime soon - and it is pretty. I like vintage! There isn't much wall space to paint so that would be an easy way to bring in warm color. It is a beautiful house and we are very thankful. So fun to create a look and feel.

Love the slate backsplash! It is all very bare right now. I think you will feel differently once you pick some accessories in an accent color and add your essentials to the countertops. It's a lovely kitchen.

I do agree the kitchen is not contemporary, but does have a more contemporary countertop finish. Whatever you do do not do anything to the kitchen without considering the whole home. Elements should flow from room to room - giving a unified feel to the space. Other photos would help when offering solutions.

Getting your own stuff in there will help, but I don't see anything in this kitchen that says contemporary EXCEPT the counter top. Everything else is very traditional. One thing that seems to be causing some visual conflict is the contrast in color and style between the back splash and the counter top. The back splash seems to be the heaviest thing in the room - visually speaking. The fact the grout lines are stacked instead of staggered also lends to the static feel. I know you said you couldn't change any of that, but I think replacing the back spash with something that is a little less contrasted and something that has less texture and provides greater color harmony between the cabinets and the counter top, will make the counter top less conspicuously contemporary in an otherwise traditional kitchen. Hope it works out for you.

You have time to make this beautiful. celliohana is right that the stacked back splash design is an issue: it is modern installation.

I think you will love your kitchen after you live in it for a while. If I knew what kind of traditional you really like, I would suggest a new chandy and new light for the kitchen. It may be that addressing lighting in the kitchen is more important than anything else you could do right now.

The white quartz is VERY contemporary and as long as you have it the kitchen it will never look right. A dark grey slate or soapstone would pull the whole kitchen together. I'm afraid if you start adding things to the counter to cover the color, you'll just get a cluttered look. Just save your money and replace it when you can. You might be able to sell the quartz to offset some cost.

ej610, I could not disagree more. the white quartz is simply a backdrop and a wonderful one. Do not spend money ripping out better than fine attributes of your home. So what if it is contemporary. Mixing is in. You can get the feel you love even if some basics contradict. You can make French country work in a loft. Do not waste money or the Earth, I beg you.

Just add some counter decor in one or two colors like orange or green and a patterned rug in the same colors.

What shades of blue or green would work? How about paired with coral/red? If I were to paint the ceiling what color would you recommend? Pale yellow? Blue? And there are two walls I could paint - at either end of the kitchen. What do you think for that? I would love to go toward an indian (American) feel - not over the top but maybe a tribal inspired patterned rug - burlap curtains or burlap trimmed curtains. Thanks again.
