absolutely can be painted but I don't think it can be stained

If you are hating it, think about design style for the room as a whole first.

try just replacing the glass screen/insert... the brass and the lines of it seem to be fighting with the more modern feel of brick. I actually like the brick but think you will see a major difference without the screen. sometimes a small tweak is all you need.

Thank you! The inserts definitely going to go. Along with the tile on the hearth.

Painted yes, stained no. But from the photos it actually looks like a nice fireplace other than the staining above the glass door and the door itself. I would suggest you look for a stone stain remover online and try to clean it off. Then replace the glass door with a new one. Or it can also be sandblasted but that is a messy project and not one you would want to undertake yourself. Once you paint it its a done deal...no turning back.

I had the ugliest fireplace in history. The previous owner of my house apparently fancied himself a carpenter, and must have had a connection at a granite warehouse. Long story short, I had a granite nightmare. Everyone said I could never paint over it because the paint wouldn't stick, but ha on them - i got some heavy-duty, kick arse primer from Sherwin Williams and went to town!!! Problem is, it's still primer white 3 years later! Haha!

Are you not happy with the brick or brick color. ?

Brick color. I would like more gray.
