The bottom 3 are glass tile. The beige-ish one looks more pink in person. The top is white with a splash of beige, which is better than the other plain tiles, but I still don't like it. I bought a ton of other samples that are not pictured here but I don't like any of them!

What color are the cabinets and floors? Can you post a photo of the space?

I have actually posted about my backsplash before and people have given suggestions, but nothing looks right. The backsplash is awful. It's all coming down. Neither the stone or the ugly metallic matches the counters. The floors are light beige. We haven't painted yet, but it will be a neutral.

A light mocha glass tile without a pink cast would look nice. I would use a larger format 4 x 8 or 4 x 12 tile with thin grout lines in your kitchen. The yellow paint also has to go as well.

I would start by looking at oversized subways to stay with the more contemporary vibe of the cabinets, pulls, and chimney hood. It's really hard to tell from the photos if your granite is warm or cool toned. It looks warm-toned until you get to the close-up with the backsplash and then it grays down quite a bit.

WOW!!! The backsplash is beyond awful - makes you wonder what they were thinking. You might consider some large format tiles - 12x24 ish. I did that and love it. If you do, have the installer center above the cooktop and work out from there.

Are you keeping the stacked stone behind the range? Regardless, I'd look for a light travertine tile, honed, that picks up the lighter toned background of the granite. Don't get a small mosaic; go with subway tile in the travertine. Daltile makes a 3 x 6 that you could straight set instead of offset for a more modern look.

In relation to the floor tile, does the granite look warm or cool? The floor tile looks cool to me and it looks like it's a pretty good match with the granite in the full kitchen photo.

But mostly I’m thinking “man, will you be THRILLED when that hideous current backsplash comes down!!!”

If you’re really undecided you could just paint with a washable paint and leave it like that for now or forever! (Either way you’re gonna be THRILLED)

A taupey cream (cream with gray undertones) might work. Just a regular glazed porcelean subway. Not glass.

modern tile your cabs and exhaust are "modern"... you need a modern tile.

keep it simple... less is best since your granite is busy..

I really like the stone behind the range. I would keep it and then do a plain tile everywhere else, I like the travertine subway idea

I would go with a matte taupe backsplash. Like the subway tile in the pic.

Choose something simple which exactly matches one of the lighter colors in the counter.

DrDeb had the best idea....instead of putting in another backsplash right away, just rip out the current one as planned, then just paint and leave it as is for awhile...until your eyes and brain have cleared from all the confusion. The wall paint will be new and fresh, and it will be much easier to pick a tile when all the permanent colors are in place. I’ve had 8 houses over the years (military) and never had a backsplash in any of them.....still don’t! Just make sure the paint is washable. Good luck!

I would go with black mirror glass, or dark metal tile. Make it pop.

No, we are not keeping any of the backsplash. Everything is ugly. The granite looks warm-toned far away, but close up, it's cool. This granite isn't something we would pick, but we are spending a fortune on painting every song room in the entire house (everything is orange, yellow, green, red), plus we need to redo the backsplash, so we don't want to spend money on the new counters, too.

Well, I have absolutely no ideas, but your first photo, the extreme close-up of the granite looks like a photo of some really good ice cream...

I think a glazed (shiny) tile ,in a contemporary size like a 3x12” and a color that is like your floor tile would look nice . It could be stunning with a dark grout like your cabinetry ( charcoal ? ) color. Is that the darkest color in the granite as well , btw. ? If you feel that would be too busy for your taste , then just match the grout to one closest to your tile. So in essence, I would suggest the color of the floor and backsplash be the same. This will highlight your granite in between.

Here are some tiles from Tile Bar ( you can order samples ,I believe ) that might go well with your other elements. I just noticed the taupe square inset in your floor tile. I think the “Willow Creek” glazed clay brick tile would be stunning.

Kelly, could you give a little more context in terms of the surrounding areas? What is the light like? What is the finish on the cabinetry or shelving adjacent to the counters? Appliance color? All of these play into the decision in my opinion.

There is a lot of sunlight coming through the rooms. I think the cabinets are laminate. The appliances are all stainless steel.

Lowes has a nice tile called "Pearl" that is a taupe color, has a handmade look, and might work well here -- you'd have to bring home a tile or two to see.

We used a limestone tile and stacked it for a streamlined look

We are getting estimates to tear down the backsplash and put new tiles up. Any idea about an approximate cost? I want to make sure we aren't getting ripped off because I have no idea how much the cost should be. This would include removing that vent and tearing down all of the stone behind it.

I’d rip the backsplash out myself. However I don’t see a photo of the entire space. Am I missing something?

Never mind. I see it maybe just take out the round things and get something simple to go under the cabinets?

Hopefully, they can remove the tile and stone without much damage to the drywall. If so, the cost will vary by location and labor costs. I'd ballpark the labor around $2500 plus tile.

Sorry! I didn’t look closely enough. I meant the part of the backsplash that is covered in those different sized squares. If you can take those off and replace them with plain off white matte subway tiles, I think you can save a heck of a lot of money and save the whole kitchen

Thank you! We went with the Lowe's Pearl tile. We got a great price. $950 to rip everything down, retile and grout. The area by the sink had water damage, so that area and the area by the hood needed new drywall. So the extra work plus material was only around $350, so $1300 total. The tiles came to about $200.

What a deal! It looks like they did a great job laying the tile. Enjoy.
