Best Kitchen Feature you have

I'm doing a kitchen remodel and I want to poll everyone that's got a new home or recent remodel themselves-- What is the best new feature/upgrade of your kitchen? Double oven? 2 dishwashers? What else?

    Drawers... even in my pantry.

oh a beverage refrigerator built into the wall at waist level, no bending down to fill or retrieve soda/water/beer. OMG BEST THING EVER

Melissa I like what you’re talking about do you mind sending me a picture of what yours looks like

Large sink. It fits whole wok to soak burned in stuff and when you need to wash anything big like garden produce or a toddler should there be a need :). Also it hides all dishes from the counter before you have time to put them in the dish washer.

Definitely 2 dishwashers. We are a family of 7 and my dishwashers are both run constantly. We recently remodeled our kitchen and a pull out trash can was a must. Under my cooktop I had a cabinet with 2 pull out shelves put in that hold my giant Le Crueset dutch oven and huge stock pot. On either side of the cooktop I had deep drawers put in that hold my pots/pans. Love the pull out drawers for pots/pans. Extra deep stainless sink (Blanco) is awesome. Low drawers for dishes.

A plumbed in coffee maker! We have the Brew Express, (even though there are models that run in the $$$$). It is connected to the same water line as the ice maker for the fridge. Makes great coffee!

It's not finished yet. My hubs and I do everything ourselves. I also have a husband who flits from one project to another, not completing the first one completely lol. We are finishing up our master bath now. He wanted to wait to trim everything out until we put in our tile floors throughout the house and trim out everything at once...makes sense. Ok enough of the excuses lol

Here are pics with the toaster drawer open and closed. You can also see the fridge.

This system from Sams Club was rated very high. Put in under sink and the spout up through the counter.

Oh and I love having that small shelf. I keep my dishwasher pods in a container there. Easily accessible.

And I also LOOOOVE my pot lid drawer that is INSIDE my pot drawer

ohhh and lol..wow there is more. I have zero uppers and all my lowers are drawers. I love that too!

French Door OVEN (no more open oven door hitting you in the chest!), appliance lift, trash pullout with compost bin.

Big windows easily opened. Many drawers. Vent a Hood exhaust fan.

Love all these ideas! Hard to know which ones are practical and worth the extra cost!

The beverage fridge was a black friday special last year at Sams for $99

A stove vent that is vented to the outside. Takes all smoke, steam, and odors to the outside so they don't pollute the kitchen. Also, a non-divided sink so you can wash big pots, refrigerator drawers, barbeque cooker grills.

Small kitchen so not alot of space for specialty items - Love my 3 drawer base for pots and pans... took a couple of tries to find the right configuration but I managed to get a lot into a 27" base! I also love the deep cabinet above the ref - seasonal stuff to the back and more readily used at the front.

Yes definitely lots of draws, good outside vented hood, good sized pantry, like double sinks. Great lighting, most important and plenty of bench space
  • 8 years ago
I have not got these but wish I did, great ideas
  • 8 years ago

The best thing in my kitchen is an appliance- my combo-steam oven.

Double ovens, Microwave oven drawer in the island, a built-in Miele coffee system, a small separate fridge in the island that we use for beverages. Also, think about how you cook and clean. For example, our dishwasher has the sink located on one side and all our everyday dishes/cutlery are stored on the other side. Easy to load/unload. The drawers in the island below where we stand to do most of our prep work holds measuring cups, cutting boards, knives, & mixing bowls.

Oh, and this sounds so silly, but a large, sturdy wooden cutting board that fits well over my sink is wonderful- extends counter space and makes meal prep easier.

There is not one great feature in the kitchen we have now but I would say double ovens and a walk-in pantry are definitely must-haves. Had them in the old house and loved them. Now to talk The Husband into renovating this kitchen...

Its been mentioned before, but I will say the best thing we did was the under cabinet lighting. Big difference maker.

Under cabinet lighting and pull out trash cans.

Two things ... as many people said, the pull out trash containers under the island. But I have to say my favorite feature is the charging station in an island drawer. There's a 4 USB outlet and we can charge everything and even keep the things in the drawer while they are charging if necessary. I found the unit online and the electrician installed it.

My kitchen is very small in a 1928 home so options were limited. My most favorite thing is my Bosch gas range (the old stove was electric). Love it! My other most favorite thing is the floor-to-ceiling pantry cabinet. Although it's small by Houzz standards, it's a wonderful feature in a small space. It's such a luxury!

MelissaR that toaster oven draw is the best! Love it

Drawer with two silver trays so I don’t have to dig out my silver chest to set table for company. Otherwise your sterling never gets used.

I love pull out pantries instead of walk ins I have them for laundry stuff , food liquor. They stay tidy and everything is easy to find. All drawers for lower storage even under the sink you will never have to get on hands and knees to find the missing pot lid.

    1. drawers

    2. 36" range (with a good hood over it). I love having space for my large pots and pans to sit directly on top of a burner, instead of having them sit only partly on a burner because I've got other burners in use and they don't fit.

    3. seamless counters. 21 years w/tile countertops was 21 years too long.

    4. a lot of lighting. overhead, under cabinet, pendants.

    5. a large single bowl sink.

Large pot drawers in the island and my husband, he does all the cooking!

I second drawers and pull outs. With the room, the oven drawer is perfect. I would love a counter oven/toaster but don't want to use counter space.

Nidnay, you need to stop showing all your wonderful things.... I'm green with envy with your things.... I LOVE the French Door oven!

I have a new kitchen and these are the features I love the most and are the most functional: 1. 2 dishwashers (flanking the sink in the island)

    1. 33" farmhouse sink

    2. dish drawers

    3. beverage refrigerator

    4. double ovens

    5. 6 burner, 36" Thermador cooktop

    7. automatic light in the walk-in pantry,

    1. lighting options: pendants, under counter, recessed (2 different sets on 2 different switches) all dimmable

    9. pot filler

    1. pull out garbage with 2 bins--recycle and trash

    Have fun!

We got a range with a double oven, rather than wall ovens -- the best part of that is that we don't waste as much energy heating a whole oven for the 90% of the time that we're just doing a single sheet or item (fishsticks, a cake, etc). And the lower oven still holds the required turkey. :)

Other favorites: full-height pantry with pull-outs, that organized several cupboards worth of stuff always falling on our heads; big drawers for all storage ware and bakeware (would have done pots and pans too if kitchen larger, but we put those on a lazy susan); full-sized trash and recycling in a single pull-out; great new 4-door fridge; big single sink; breakfast bar/pass-through for kid to sit at while we cook and fuss. Of course, we lived with our crummy old kitchen for 12 or so years and had a pretty good idea of how we live in the space and what could be better!

Huge single sink and my Samsung Chef Collection Induction stove!!! Good luck!

Motion touchless kitchen faucet. And garbage disposal button on top of counter near the sink rather than under the sink. A 1 HP garbage disposal- it will even grind up tree branches! And a ceiling fan. You'd be amazed how much you will use it- either to keep you cool as you cook or to clear the air after you burn something-lol. And motion lights if you tend to go into your kitchen during the night. That's a very good idea for bathroom, too.

My slide in stove. The burners are gas and the oven is electric convection. Love it. Also my upper cabinet by the stove has a double door for built in spice racks and like others above, I really like my slide out trash and recycling

A favorite of mine is a built in cutting bond with a cutout that lines up over the pull out trash container. An old idea my husband brought to the design

My current kitchen isn't my design and is mostly terrible. But I love the walk in pantry and the reach-in pantry I converted from a broom closet.

We've been in our kitchen less than a year and we have so many awesome things:

    • two-bin trash cabinet (trash/recycling) with Ikea Utrusta opener - I cannot tell you how much we LOVE the opener!
    • drawers - lots of drawers
    • 33" single basin clean-up sink
    • combi-steam oven - we use this oven ALL the time
    • 30" oven - old kitchen had a little, bitty oven
    • 36" induction cooktop - so responsive!
    • refrigerator drawers in island
    • microwave drawer - so easy to use and safer than reaching overhead
    • appliance garage - hides coffee maker and KA mixer
    • prep island - I love, love, love having a prep island. Not having my back to the room feels great!
    • big, bumped out window
    • fantastic lighting (LED) - lots of cans with digital dimmers that allow a huge range of adjustment
    • Built-in Sub-Zero refrigerator - people told us it would keep things fresh longer, but it still amazes me how long food lasts
    • Our appliances: this is the first time I've had top-of-the-line appliances, and wow, they are so nice; excellent performance. (Wolf, Sub-Zero, Vent-a-hood, and Bosch)
    • THE most important and loved feature of our new kitchen is the functional layout and GW totally made that happen.

Pull out trash, tilt out sink tray, 9" spice cabinet-I use it for soup cans, etc. since I don't have a pantry-as many bottom drawers as possible and a tray divider for cookie sheets and cutting boards.

So many things! The many windows that bring in lots of light, the Advantium Speed Oven, pullout trash bin, lots of drawers, tray dividers, wet bar, pullout pantry, utility closet, 6-burner gas range top, large single bowl sink. And the bright white cabinets and reclaimed wood and brick. Love my new (3 year old) kitchen!!

I completely agree with Cheryl, a functional layout is the KEY feature. Our old kitchen wasn't small, but the layout was terrible. There was no prep space. Our new layout is wonderful. All the rest of the stuff is fantastic, but if I'd just replaced the old items with new ones, and hadn't addressed the layout, it would have been a waste of a remodel.

noreaster10 and Cheryl- love some of the ideas! Brilliant!

YOu all have been so helpful! I love how there are so many consistencies between the upgrades- clearly some things i have to do!

For those with the cutting board above the trash bins-- is it removable so you an clean it?

Great post! I have an old kitchen that needs a redo, but I love my big window over the sink, and my old IKEA undercounter lights.

I love my new counter height bay window. Also my counter depth french door fridge and induction range. And my trash pull out, and surprisingly because I really didn't want it, my super susan. And my larger pantry with pullouts. Unlike many others, I am not a fan of all drawers, but I do have pull outs in all of my lower cabinets which are great. Oh, and my touchless faucet is wonderful. I could go on and on......

    Sonia c

Yes, my cutting board is completely removable for cleaning. I keep it oiled and never let onions, garlic or meats touch it. Onions and garlic because they stay within in wood and meats because I am a vegetarian and do not want any meat bacteria to contaminate my foods.
    last modified: 8 years ago

we keep a separate cutting board (plastic) for meat...

we also put our veggie peels, etc., into a countertop compost bin rather than the trash,

I put small pull out pantries between the frig and the cooktop. It is where I keep all my spices, and things I use at the cook top. I put another one by the stacked ovens. Biggest mistake I made was only putting in two, I wish I had put in four. I put in drawers instead of cabinets with doors everywhere I could. I have doors only above the ovens for cookie sheets, etc and the sink area. Love the drawers. I also put in a butler’s pantry to store the good china and also as the bar area for beverages. It’s wonderful because it keeps that out of my work triangle while I’m cooking. Lastly I really put in a lot of lighting but have it on dimmers and separate switches so all the pot lights don’t have to be on at the same time. Now that winter has hit and I cook at night I’m happy with the results. It was “too much” as some warned because I have control of it. As we get older its harder to see and I need the light. I also did a honed quartzite on the island and I am so glad its NOT polished stone.
