DCLOSTBOY Report to Classy Bedroom Thread! .....please :)

last modified: 12 years ago
Here is my lovely bedroom (can we sense the sarcasm?). It is sad and needs help, It has never been decorated as I have yet to get to it. I have a tendency to create eclectic and quirky spaces, and would like to keep the quirk out of my bedroom, or at least to a minimum. I would like to make our room into a lovely, well done, CLASSY space and for the love of god, i don't know how to accomplish this task....will you guys help me?

SIDE TABLE LAMPS: Not bad (no sarcasm). You mentioned you like a bit of the funk…that you have in those lamps and I see nothing wrong with them. Actually based on extrapolating your personality from what you’ve written I would say the lamps fit your style quite nicely. Keepers.
BEDDING: Keep with the dark/black color you have going on with the furniture with something like this: http://www.redbubble.com/people/davidbalber/works/10954187-sea-life?c=240633-total-abstract&p=duvet-cover it is mostly black but has a pop of red.
ARTWORK: You need a “wow” piece over the bed. You have a great wall for art above the bed because there aren’t any windows. I would go with a horizontal piece that is mostly black and has a bit of the red in it (if you decide to go with that duvet listed above…you get the idea). I would look for something at least 6’ wide, preferably 8’, by 2’ or 3’ high. This will stress the horizontal which will give you a sleek look.
MIRROR ON DRESSER: Needs to go if you want a more sleek room. If you’re good with the eclectic then keep it. It does match the colors you have which can work: black (furniture), red (duvet, artwork), whitish (walls), brownish (floors)…
CEILING FAN: Needs to go. No debate on this one! there are a myriad of ceiling fans out there and just because they look expensive doesn’t mean they are. Check out this Westinghouse fan: http://www.amazon.com/Westinghouse-7801665-Two-Light-Reversible-Five-Blade/dp/B00067YOJ0 it even matches your black color scheme. I don’t know your budget but $95 for what is essentially a piece of furniture as far as I’m concerned, is well worth it. You will find that a good fan can change the room immediately.
TV STAND: I would look to Walmart or even IKEA for a simple lowboy-type piece that is long and low…maybe 30” high. I would put this piece to the left of the window (bad mojo to block the window with a TV….). I know we all think the TV needs to be directly in front of the bed and in a perfect world you’re right, but this is not a perfect world and whoever designed this house didn’t think of proper TV placement.
MISCELLANEOUS: I would go to a place like Pier 1 Imports to find a tall vase with straight lines…maybe a tall glass cylinder, and then fill it with curly willow branches. I would also get a similar (but not the same) vase and place it to the left of the new TV lowboy to tie the room together.
I also noticed you have some dark paint on the walls for color testing…I would keep the walls as-is. Remember less is more. Good luck

Balber architecture inc, thanks for the time you took to give some advice. But, the room is pretty much finished now. However I would love your critique on how it turned out (if you go closer to the end of the comments you'll see the room complete) and any more suggestions would be appreciated :)

Toats, Has your new purchase arrived?
I like the media cabinet...helps bridge the other pieces in the room nicely. You did a really nice job on this room.
No, it's scheduled to arrive on the 7th.

Thanks DC, but you mean "we" :)

Ima miss this room a lot when I sell this place!
As we all know, on Houzz, anyone can make suggestions...you made the final decisions :)
Well, DC, when I open my shop and start a new thread I sure hope you're not too busy to lend a suggestion or two :) here's my inspiration pic for the colors of the shop.
Should you call that robin's egg or Tiffany blue ?
Idk which it is but it's the pic I'll be carrying around with me when choosing paint and logo colors and all that!
so the new media dresser arrived! i love it! its a bit taller than expected and it is a beast, really big, but im very happy with it. the room is pretty much done now. i was going to replace the ceiling fan with a pretty light, but since ill be selling the house, ill leave that for the new owners to do/pick. i plan on making a slim/shallow shadowbox for my little wedding dress and eventually i WILL knit a super chunky throw for the end of the bed.

heres a closeup of the tv stand. And i am loving my weird cat pic, i think it looks great. i tried to get a closeup of the velvet blue matting and silver frame, but the glare is pretty bad....guess i shoulda went with the anti glare glass :/
  • 11 years ago
The room looks wonderful, Toats. Very serene and elegant - Classy! I really like the white stand. And as far as your cat picture, you did well there, too. Non-glare glass doesn't work with double matting. You'd lose all detail and be very aware of the glass itself.

    Very nice. A lovely room.

I looked back at your original photo compared to these current photo's and it's an amazing transformation!
Beautiful room Toats! The media cabinet is perfect.
Perfection! DC will be so proud!

Wonderful...but you never said if you were happy with / proud of the outcome...I find there are always one or two things I'd want to tweak, but, if in new surroundings soon, you'll be able to do that. Personal opinion is: "so different and so much better"
    Great transformation of a room!!!
I love just about everything about the room. the one thing i dont like is my bed and the night stands. i bought those back in my "modern craze". id really prefer some thing like these...
Give me the short version.......you are moving? When? So sad to leave all this behind, but guess it can all join you in a new home easily.
and the stenciled wall, i would change i think. its pretty, but id like a stencil with a bit of whimsy....
yes, likely putting the house on the market in the spring, thinking about moving to savannah ga. it is sad to leave all of it behind after all the work ive done, but like DC says, it will give me a chance to tweak things in my new place :)
Ahhhhh...I remember when we were focused on classy :)
And I love the cat pic...size and framing certainly elevated it. 5x5 would have just been silly
  • 11 years ago
yes, i knew i had to go "classy" cause of the bed set. but the overall design is kinda missing that "quirk" you know i love!

agree, 5x5 would not have worked for cat pic. its one of my fav pieces of art now. when i move to my new place you can be sure whatever room she ends up in will get decorated around her :)
It's great to see this room again! Love your new media center AND your art :-))
I think the quirk comes out in the kitty picture! I love it!
Very classy indeed. And I love that little wedding dress!
The room looks amazing and your house will sell itself!
Very pretty. Wouldn't change a thing (except for the ceiling fan--but that's moot).

The weird cat looks perfect in there.
It all turned out very well, toats! I laughed out loud at one of your pictures (the last one in your first set). The dresser critter appears to be having a staredown with framed cat as reflected in the mirror!
nwduck, lol, you're right! That's hilarious! The cat pic is one of those "the eyes follow you no matter where you are" pics. Her name is opal. The photographer owns her, she's a retired show cat or something.
I deleted this thread because I thought you were finished with your room. Then I discovered it active again. Nice find Toats! Looking good!
So Toats, are you going to have a brick and mortar shop in Savannah?
Love the dresser and how your bedroom turned out. Would you have the link for your bedroom rug? I looked back through your thread but couldn't find it. Looking for something like it. Thanks!!
wilson, no idea yet....hope so :)

dreorion, i dont have the link for the rug anymore, but it is called Sphinx Revival by Oriental Weavers.

That is strange. Tanakorn Konrang, either Houzz randomly translated what you said with my post from Jan. 8, or else you must totally agree with me! Whatever it is, this was a beautifully executed project.

lol julia i totally noticed that!

Weird. I think it was fissfiss, on a different thread, who said someone plagiarized her comment. I wonder if it's the same thing happening here either by accident or on purpose.

yup was fiss that got plagiarized before

It was me...RREDS THEORY is that he's Trolling for blog hits...so don't click through.

This room ended up gorgeous! Really looking forward to seeing it part 2 in Savannah with more whimsy. :)

Can we get a close up of the dresser creature?
