What is the purpose of your counter? Is it to display things? What about a bookcase? You could have some very large openings with lights. Once I saw a bookshelf with an angled shelf out into the room (think podium) that displayed magazines. One area could be a bar if you wanted, pretty glasses or bottles. The lower section could even be small drawers.

Narrow glass table with some deco on top of it, bring some of the colors from the painting behind sofa on the table, colored glass, some narrow boxes to set benieth for extra storage. Even a narrow seat that has hidden storage , for extra seating when you have family and friends over. You can tuck it away when not used for seating.

I would rather see the little alcove where the clock is have built in shelving instead of two mismatched pieces of furniture next to each other. Make the shelves modern and match the wood from the staircase.

I wouldn't suggest a console on that wall, unless you remove the chest in the alcove. That would be too cluttered. I would suggest installing floating shelves in the alcove, and go as high as you can. Then I would place a bench or settee under the stairs for warmth and extra seating.

Perhaps a long and low console to offer some storage? I'd consider moving the clock out of the alcove, to around the corner, and mount some floating shelves in the alcove up high.

1) Console table w/either rattan storage boxes below or two ottomans for additional seating

2) Floating Shelves with a bench for additional seating

3) Book shelves w/lighting that mimic the height of the stairs (visual interest)!!!!

I have a different question , are you planning to put some hand rails on stairs?

We have a staircase like the one pictured (ours is in the rough stage still). We are building a bookcase from the floor up and extending it up to be the safety wall for the steps. We will put a handrail on top of the angled top of the bookcase.
