I'm still on the hunt for a back splash tile. My husband is about ready to glue cardboard to the walls and be done with it. He just doesn't understand that it has to work with the slab. I had Fireclay send me many samples, including Foggy Morning, and they just don't work with my slab.

Here are two crackle subway tiles by Encore. To the left of the tiles is my cabinet color and the right is a piece of the flooring. The piece behind the tile is paint in Revere Pewter. Please let me know what you think. Thanks so much.

Have you tried a crackle in the light color of the veining in your countertop.

Just an FYI, on Walker Zanger- it can take forever and a day to get to location, even ordering through an authorized rep/designer. So if you go with it, go early.

smm5525, I have looked at the off white crackle color that picks up the same in the slab. I like it but my husband thinks we need color. Everything looks white to him so I was trying to stay with something subway like but with color. I hope this picture is better. The ones above in the thread so more of the slab. Thanks for your help.

Monitors are bad for color, but the one on the right looks like it is going lavender? The other crackle is way too dark. Also gold undertones, so that is not a good one either. IMO white would be the best. You can bring color in with counter top pieces, a tea kettle with color, flowers, towels, lots of ways to do that. But color on your backsplash is going to be difficult. You could go with something completely out of the box like a cobalt blue! But your best bet is either a pure white, or a bone color.

Beth, you are so kind to send more samples. This has been a work in progress! My husband doesn't get it. What I had problems with with some of the samples is the white was way too white and I didn't like it with the off white cream cabinets. I have two bags of samples now but am leaning towards Encore crackle in Storm. It has a lot of variation in color that I think I need. I learned a lot about this such as I should of thought about a back splash when selecting my slab. Oh well, it's been something my family loves to tease me about. try subway tile in biscuit color - looks perfect with taj

is that the gray one above? perhaps in a herringbone pattern. i'm just over the common subway pattern for everyone's kitchen. its safe and neutral. which is why i'm over it! but if your are asking about the color of Encore, the gray one goes. don't like the other

the calacatta one I posted is not a bright white. it's a creamy white.

Checkers, I'll let design pros give advice on "right or wrong" track, but a word of advice on Encore: Supervise the layout of this personally. Make sure that it all "flows", at the splash areas before anything is set. With tile that has color variations, even subtle, you want to make sure that you don't have "splotches" of the same color next to each other. It happens...

Beth, I don't have a pic of the Storm tile. The one pictured one the right is Encore Silver Crackle. When I had a full board of it, I thought it had too much gray. My slab has lots of brown. This is why I like the Storm and the variation of color; it gives me both colors as well as the cream color of my cabinets. I may have to check out the calcatta herringbone. I like it. Do you know who makes it?

I am worried and will have to be involved in the process with the tile guy for the very reason that Juanita mentioned. Thanks Juanita. I will have a better feel for the tile guy feeling about this layout in a couple of days. I hope he get it and me!

What was the end results? So curious, as we also chose the Taj Mahal for the countertops and now looking for backsplash ideas. :)

Here are a few pics of the Encore Storm with the Taj Mahal quartzite. We still need to get that range hood up and the electrical completed. It took me many months to find what I really liked that would work with the quartzite. I love that it's not white (hubby said no to white), it has a crackle finish with the pooling of the greys and browns and I'm glad we went to the ceiling with it. When we are all done, I'll post a final pic of the entire room.

I bought it at a tile shop in San Diego called Unique Stone Imports. You won't find this at an Arizona tile or the big box hardware stores, but those one of a kind tile stores will likely carry it and have sample boards. It has to be made when ordered and takes 6 weeks for them to make it. The shipping was amazing, not one broken tile!

Thanks Beth and Flo. Many thanks to you both for your help months ago. The Encore Crackle in Storm has a gray-green to it (so it seems to me), but with the pooling and the random pieces that are brownish, it all worked with my slab, which has browns and some patches of a muted green here and there. The creamy color around the edges was great too because we matched the grout to this color and it make it look like a larger grout line, but it's actually very thin. This was my alternative to the white subway that I wanted. With the counter tops being honed, I wanted sparkle and this seemed to work.

Beth, this tile is pricey. It was about $39 sf. I only have 8 ft ceilings and I liked the idea of going all around the windows, so it was my splurge.

wow. yes I figured they wouldn't be a cheap date. those are more than fireclay tile, basically does the same, although encore has different shapes and coloring. I really like them. Totally worth the splurge and so much more interesting than the white subway. I'm going to remember these tiles! would you mind if I shared your photo/tile pic to show others?

I know you said you don't want plain white but think of a white backsplash with darker grout.

A gray/taupe tone would be beautiful with white.

Love your choice of backsplash! For anyone with mahogany wood cabinets and Taj Mahal counters, I chose Lunada Bay's Tommy Bahama line in Cocos Keeling. It tied in the counters with the wood nicely and had the tropical feel I was going for.
