One of the glories of grasscloth is how wonderful it looks when painted over, and you can probably do it more than once. It's a wonderful thing and very much back in favor now! Lucky you!

I painted over grasscloth with primer and latex. It was beautiful. made a wonderful finish behind paintings and sconces. Paneling can also be improved with the right primer and paint. l sold the house with the painted grasscloth and paneling. Unfortunately, I don't have pictures that show the finishes.

Can you tell me what products you used to paint over this grasscloth? I love it and need to do this to my oxidized grasscloth!

I used kils primary to prevent the color and stains from bleeding through. Then I used 2 coats of Behr flat latex wall paint.

This looks amazing! I am hoping to do the same thing in a new home and want to be so careful not to paint it in a way that ruins the texture of the grasscloth. Did you use a brush or a roller? Thank you.

I too am considering painting over grasscloth which is in my new home. However I'd be looking to paint it lighter as its a small room. What shade of cream/beige do you think would go? The fireplace has now been painted white? Thanks!

After you paint the grasscloth a light glaze will revive the texture.

I just bought grass cloth wallpaper online it's beautiful however wrong color. It's too costly to return so I think this may be a good solution. Thank you

I know this thread is a little older, but I wanted to ask how many times do you think grass cloth can be painted over?

I have a 1979 home that has grass cloth in the family room. We really like grass cloth but it appears to have been painted over at least 2 times. I want a lighter color (it is a yellowy beige). If I had to take it down, I would have grass cloth put back up. I have removed wallpaper before, but my guess that this will quite a job! Not one I want to do!

Do you think three times painted will be bad?

We had grass cloth in a large game room with vaulted ceiling....along came a tornado. There was water damage to just one area of paper, not the wall itself. The insurance company would not pay to repair or replace the grass cloth but they PAID TO ACTUALLY REMOVE ALL THE DRYWALL FROM THE ENTIRE ROOM, REPLACE DRYWALL AND REPAINT. it was crazy. Everyone was afraid to paint grasscloth.

It looks like it wasn't the best paint job to begin with -- it looks like the paint was applied thickly. I love the look of painted grass cloth, but too much paint and it will look awful.

I don't think a new layer of grasscloth (unpainted) over it will work either.
