Would you recommend your vacuum?

Hi houzzers -- Who can recommend a powerful, lightweight upright? Ease of use and ability to function without a lot of bending over is key. Getting conflicting review on various Dyson, Meile and Shark models -- would love to hear any input.

I love dyson and just got my second one this week not because there was anything at all wrong with my other but because I wanted something that was lighter due to my bad back and the fact that we now have stairs. Our original dyson is 8 yrs old and still running strong. It will go to my sister. I got the dc41 animal. Target has an amazing sale right now where you gat a gift card when You buy a dyson. I've been watching prices on this model for months and its the best deal by far and ends this weekend. Dyson is expensive but worth every penny especially of you have pets. I am so impressed with the quality of their products. Like I said my "old" one is still working perfect after all these years. If we were still on one floor I would not have replaced it.

I'm a Kirby girl. I'd rather deal with the loudness for the power and reliability.

We have a Dyson animal that has been going strong for several years, love it! We just bought a Shark, can't think of model (it is white with vac head & a separate steam head & the canister can be removed for doing stairs easily), love it too!

Love my Shark. Light weight with powerful suction. Filters can be washed and very useful accesories.

dyson DC 45 does not work well on hardwood or tile, even with attachments , just keeps pushing stuff ahead. Pretty disappointed, even after phoning them...had to do a test by sucking up shredded toilet paper, what a joke, I guess every poor vacuum could suck those up...not impressed at all. Using it now as a handheld mostly and on carpets, is ok. But could have gotten a cheaper unit to do that job.

I love my miele twist. It's not light but it is very quality. Made in. Germany! It moves like the twisting dyson, which I found to be inferior to my Miele.

Love my Dysons. I love that they are bagless, powerful, have lots of attachment options, washable filters. Works on my tiles, carpets & floorboards. But I have a dodgy back, and the upright can be cumbersome up the stairs. It was for this reason that I got the cordless/handheld Dyson. Attachments work with both my upright & cordless.

I am sold on dyson. Didn't want to spend the money on it orginally, but my husband did, and I really like it alot.

I love Hoover products. They have several price ranges but still a great buy for the money. Ours does both hardwoods and carpet. It is also a model that easily moves by giving some mechanical help. It does a great job without breaking the bank..The good thing about Hoover is you can get the bags at so many places such as Walmart, Home Depot and more. We also have a Hoover steam cleaner and Floormate.

For the price of a Dyson, buy the Miele twisting upright. After one year, not a complaint. It is good as new. Filters are the best and not one speck of dirt in the compartment.

I use canister type vacs and LOVE the Miele. I have one upright which is a miele but I dont like it.
It is several years old, so maybe they have improved them.

My Miele canisters are quiet ( i can hear the phone ring), but filters aren't cheap.

I love my Miele upright with the twist. Really sturdy and easy to use. But it's not lightweight, so if that is a top consideration, be forewarned.

I am also on the market for a vacuum. Wish the house we are downsizing to had central vac. I have been looking at consumer reports and have found that it is the model rather than the manufacturer that matters. Some Dysons were good, others not, same with Mieles. It depends on what you need it for i.e. shedding pets, etc. I have consumer reports online so I can check the vacuums rating while I am there. It's inexpensive and effective if it saves me from a $400.00 mistake.

In my experience most vacuums are great for at least a year or two then the problems start. Dyson was the first time that didn't happen. Ive never had a single problem and i used it every other day for 8 yrs. Sorry if I sound like a salesperson; I swear I'm just a clean freak lol. The newer models are much better as they are lighter and easier to maneuver.

I love my Eureka "Boss". I have had it for over 4 years and no issues. Will suck the chrome off a trailer hitch! Bought one for the lake, too. Uses bags as I hate the bag- less. I vacuum everyday on carpet and hardwood and can't imagine that a $400-$500 vacuum could work any better.

I have a Sears/Kenmore "Quick Clean" bagless..We are hard on our vacuums..kids, pets...we are outdoors a lot in summer..make messes all the time and often do not even put the vacuum away because we use it so much..We paid under $100 and it continues to amaze me..picks up everything! We have literally blown up Hoovers, Dirt Devils.

I have had a Royal since the late 1980s (although I'm on my third). It's heavy, but can suck sand out of carpets. Difficult to do stairs with tho.

Thanks everyone. I was hoping for a concensus, but all of the info is a big help, dodgy backs and all!

Olldbobbi -- one of the thank you notes I sent from my wedding twenty-ahem years ago was to a friend of my mother's, saying, "Thank you so much for the vacuum. It sucks!..." Mom would have been aghast, but Mrs. H howled.
