As both a structural and decorative element, it requires a good builder-form worker to get it right. However, it is well worth the effort. Board-formed concrete, made by using timber boards as the formwork, is later stripped to reveal the boards’ patterns. If done well, it can read like lime-washed timber, more than like concrete, and provide wonderful soft, light gray tones, with the reversed grain and knots from the timber creating a beautifully natural finish.

Finne’s exploration of crafted modernism includes a fascination with the poetry of lines. “I like to study the characteristics of lines — how to take the fluid, organic, spontaneous nature of a hand-drawn line and translate it using unlikely industrial materials and processes,” he says. He drew this light fixture by hand and then had it cut from 1½-inch-thick aluminum using a CNC water-jet cutter. There are two of these fixtures in the space — an 8-foot-long fixture over the dining table and one twice as long over the kitchen island. He went through several iterations of the fixtures and mocked them up in plywood onsite to see how they worked in the space. In the end they took more than 30 hours of water-jet cutting. The final versions have small embedded LED lights.

Solar window film (this is Night Vision 25 window tint) can reduce 50 to 87 percent of the sun’s glare, while allowing you to enjoy the outside views. Look at the difference between the left and right windows in this “before” and “after” photo. Can you see how reducing glare actually enhances views while easing eye strain? In addition, window tints can significantly reduce heat and save on energy bills without changing the look of existing windows or doors.
The basement came as an afterthought, mentioned by Gonzalez’s husband. Luckily, it was an easy addition. After digging out an 8-foot section of backfill, the team built a concrete retaining wall and a set of stairs to the first floor. The raw, exposed room works well for movie nights and as a quiet space that’s separate from the first floor.
