Bar pull or surface-mounted pulls. This is a great way of making a pocket door handicapped accessible. The pocket is framed in typical fashion, but blocking is added to push the door out by about 3½ inches. This gives room to mount the pull and allow for someone in a wheelchair or walker to open and close the door more easily. The finished opening is then sized to account for the reduced clearance
Install airplane-hangar-style doors. These are garage-style doors taken to the next level. The pro who worked on this project customized a set of doors by adding a hinge in the middle, giving them a striking look. The doors also save interior space when open (they fold up instead of sliding into the space)

This clerestory combines with the horizontal window above the bed to maintain views and privacy when the curtains are pulled shut.
10. Rest assured. Don't forget to allow some downtime. Encourage independence with low-energy activities such as reading, listening to music or, my favorite, nap time
The bench. There is always a place for a bench. My favorite place is in front of a bed, where it can be seating or hold clothes. Visually, I just love the way a bench anchors the bed. That same bench will work wonderfully in an entry or behind a sofa. It can also work as a coffee table, which is a bonus if you have a small space.

In this contemporary home office designed by Dror Barda Architects, the relationship between inside and outside is extremely important; a layered composition. The large corner window is visually open to a rock garden bound by concrete walls. Note how the walking surface in the garden aligns with the top of the casework inside. As well, the built-in defined by the wood-faced drawers mimics the concrete walls outside: two spaces, inside and outside, of the same form and relationship.
If your space is tight, look into corner chairs for a snug fit
Add a work nook. We've debated whether or not a desk is a restful item to have in the bedroom, but for many it's a matter of necessity. The corner is an unobtrusive spot that helps keep your relaxation and work spaces separate. You can also use this idea for a dressing table; just add a tabletop mirror.

So I bought a $299 murphy bed mechanism, which came with plans and instructions for building a simple wall bed frame. I hired a cabinet crew to build and install the frame, attach the mechanism and flank it with bookcases. Construction costs came to about $700, including materials and labor.
The client came up with the idea of a Murphy bed that could fold out of the way when not in use. The designers then had to figure out how to transform the sleeping space into a living space. They didn't want to have to see the bottom of the bed in the way that many Murphy beds are styled, so they created a giant pivoting door. The door hides the bed when it's not in use, and becomes a partition between sleeping and living areas when the bed is out

Design idea: Slim cabinets on closet doors. Why: Double up on storage by attaching low-profile cabinets to the outside of the closet doors in your guest room. Slim cabinets like these can be useful for storing shoes, accessories or toiletries. Cost: Ready-made wall-mounted cabinets can be purchased from home improvement stores and Ikea, and start at about $200. Where these work: Sturdy traditional doors and pivoting doors can usually handle the extra weight of a slim storage cabinet. You may also use them on sliding closet doors, but install them only on the outer door…otherwise you won’t be able to open the closet
