ONE OF THE TOP THREE - I like these edges -- they're well sanded/well-worn, but have enough wavy irregularity to be interesting. Top one is closer; bottom one has a bit too much 'distressing'; almost looks branded.

this is the basic idea of the fireplace wall, except the left base cabinets will be four 4-drawer cabinets below (2 filing & 2 desk), with the wood top and 3 bookshelves above; the right is a shallower space so will just have bookshelves floor to ceiling. There's no fireplace surround below, but a wood mantle to match the filing cabinet top.
