High uppers. The standard placement for upper cabinets has long been 18 inches above the counter. Modern installations now often hang 21 to 24 inches above, or even much higher, to give the work surface below more of an open feel. This reduces the amount of cabinet space within easy reach but still allows for plenty of storage for less commonly used items.

Quarter Sawn White Oak Cabinets The right wood species can shave several hundred dollars off your total cost. Oak, shown here, is almost always affordable. Hickory is normally an upgrade from oak. Species such as maple can hike up the price tag by up to $1,000. Ultimately, wood species price will be determined by the cabinet manufacturer. Ask your local cabinet shop about the most affordable species. Inset Hinge: I designed this pantry using a hybrid euro case construction where the doors overlay the case but are inset to the side panels, flat lower rail or (light rail), and upper rail or (crown backer). Using this system I can use a concealed overlay hinge. The one I prefer is Blum clip top with blumotion built in. A common mistake is not leaving sufficient space next to or opposite a fridge or an oven. With a fridge, this counter space is merely convenient, but having space next to or opposite an oven and a cooktop, as seen in this scheme, is also important for safety. This way, you shouldn’t find yourself carrying piping-hot food across your kitchen, looking for a counter on which to set it down. You should also make sure frequently used appliances, such as the fridge, are at the periphery of your kitchen so other members of the household can access them without having to fully enter the kitchen.
The wood was first treated with Rubio Monocoat Fumed, then with a coat of Rubio Monocoat Pure Oil. They used the same treatment on the library shelves, hall cabinets and master bathroom vanity, creating continuity throughout the house.
A lid partion at the back of a wide, deep drawer neatly stores pot and pan lids for easy access.

In the island. When you have a kitchen island that’s as long as the Mississippi, you have ample room for cabinets dedicated to tablecloth storage. These pullouts make the cloths easy to keep pressed and organized. Tip: Organize from front to back by season — the ones you pull out only once a year for a specific holiday or occasion should go in back. With two racks like this, you can also organize by table: perhaps round breakfast or porch tablecloths on one side, serious rectangular dining room linens on the other.
These cabinets were custom made by Craft-Maid Cabinets in Reading PA. It may be that they altered their typical construction somewhat to achieve this effect of an old pine chest. Their website should outline their construction standards.

The cabinets are from a company called Kennebec out of Kennebec Maine. They are absolutely beautiful hand made custom cabinets. No laminate, no veneer-all solid oak, quarter sawn from reclaimed material.

The cabinets in this historic home are quarter sawn white oak. Yes, all the trim matches the cabinets, not only the wood species, but most of the oak is from the same supplier. My cabinet maker milled all the decorative crown mouldings and shipped the same custom stain for the flat board that the contractor supplied and then stained on site. There is such a variation within the same species of wood it can be difficult to have the same stain color remain consistent even in one board. Each species of wood takes stain differently than an other. If you have nicely finished cabinets, I do recommend either staying with the same trim around the room, or going dramatically differently like a painted trim.
