I've moved frequently in my life...first as an "army brat", and then as an adult...so I learned to pack when I was a small child. But nothing prepared me for the disastrous move my sister and I made together 8 years ago. I won't horrify you with the details of the move itself. I'll just fast forward to the first night in our new town home on the Texas Gulf Coast. I had collapsed into bed about 1:00 a.m. when there was a loud "whoosh" and crash on the 2nd floor. After another set of those sounds, my Sis and I discovered that the main plumbing line in the 2nd floor bath had "exploded". "Half the Gulf of Mexico" was pouring across the floors, draining into our garage, and happily racing down the street, seeking to rejoin its waters of origin! Unfortunately, most of our books, art pieces, family pictures, rugs, and small appliances were directly in its path...still in boxes in the garage. We lost thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of possessions that night that even a good insurance policy hardly reimbursed us for! There were, after all, things that couldn't be replaced at any cost.

For our next (and hopefully, final) move...4 years ago... we packed everything in large plastic bags inside boxes to prevent the re-occurrence of such an event, and we put moth balls in the boxes to guard against bugs, rodents, or who knows what else since we knew that since we were seriously "downsizing", short term storage of much of our "stuff" would be necessary. That has enabled me to sleep a bit more peacefully...and so far, it seems to have also protected the items we had to store.

OMGosh Dana - what an adventure - as horrible as it was....... come to think of it, I was wondering where that toaster was from as it headed southbound on one of our creeks swishing through the 'gator's pond on its way to San Jac River and the Gulf! I sure hope that wasn't yours......

It is obvious there are two things that weren't destroyed in that "Tejas flood" - your lives and your humour. Keep them both - always.... welcome to the great nation of tejas.....where manure happens....:)

Here's a tip for if you're moving with a small child. Make absolutely sure you know where her beloved Princess the Penguin is (or whatever the "lovey" is named). We ended up with helpers who stripped my 9yo daughter's bed and when she saw them packing the blankets, she grabbed her beloved stuffed penguin and hid it for safety in a laundry basket. That night, at 11:30, all moved in and surrounded by boxes everywhere, we had NO idea where Princess was and dd was sobbing. I will never forget the frantic search! We finally did find the penguin and then dd was able to go to bed, which thankfully had been all set up in her new room.
