illional: I'm assuming either the painting isn't signed or the google search turned out empty. In that case, it can be difficult to find out artist, date or value on your own. I would suggest to first email a picture of your painting to your nearest fine art museum - not commercial art gallery. (please do not bring the painting to them, it increases chances of damaging the painting, but it is unnecessary at this stage). They will be able to direct you to who can be of assistance, either in-house, or a trustworthy appraiser. Hope this helps!

I am a paintings conservator, and I have to say it would be very dangerous to wet or humidify the back of a painting as described in the article. One of the main culprit in paintings damages is rapid changes in environmental conditions. That includes a quick rise or decrease in humidity, or a rapid change in temperature. Just as the sun warms your skin, it will also warm up a painting quickly, with unpredictable results. This is why museums' environment are so controlled. Also, different textile fibres react differently to water, but so as the varied materials a painting is made of. If one layer in the painting shrinks or expand, but none of the other layers follow, you end up with flaking paint.
