I'm in a townhouse that I bought at a great price because it needs a lot of work. Kitchen is a galley and needs complete re-do. I want good workmanship but not to put more cash into this place than proportionately will return when I sell in the near future. I'm tired of stainless everywhere I look because everyone has it--and the price difference is significant when figuring cash available. I love white appliances, built-ins (oven, cooktop, microwave,) and want to know if I'm the only person on the planet who is sick of stainless.

It would be nice to know, of that $35,000 mix range remodel, how that money is spent. We've had a couple verbal quotes from remodel co's for a 11 x 12 kitchen, keep same footprint, one was $24k, other was $35k, but neither man would say how much was for materials vs. Labor. We are not sure where the money would go at all. Both estimates seem extremely overpriced (we are keeping our appliances). We are very tempted to be our own contractors and just bid out the various phases to individual workers. Demolition/removal, so the cabinet stain/finish & paint ourselves, hire an electrical guy for a couple more outlets, granite install by the granite vendor, hire a plumber to connect the new sink, etc. For such a small kitchen and keeping same appliances it shouldn't be $35k or even 24k.

Sabinemurphy, I'm with you! Have never liked stainless appliances. White all the way. And a note I got from my realtor: When selling, it doesn't matter what color the appliances are but they must match. So no stainless fridge or dishwasher if everything else is white.
