Just wanted to add...not only are original windows Infinitely more interesting and charming than replacements, they are made from "sterner stuff" than even high-end, modern wood windows (which are holy cow expensive). The old ones are generally going to be old-growth, virgin forest wood that simply can't be bought anymore except piece by piece as you hunt them down in antique stores and salvage yards. That wood is more rot and bug resistant than the younger, softer wood we use now, even the really good stuff.

Good modern glass can be fitted into old sashes, puttied, and weatherstripped (use bronze or copper, not foam). Old casements can be repaired. These components have lasted a hundred years and, with care, they'll last another hundred. The replacements are PLANNED to expire in 20 or 30, and many don't even make it that long. So.....save on energy costs and waste it on components down the line? Or take the time to fix it correctly and maybe save on both?
