Once a galley kitchen with a garage door at the end of it, MOTIF reconfigured the layout and moved the garage door, removed a wall and opened the kitchen to the adjacent living space, The couple who lives in this cottage-like home has a great place to cook and entertain friends. These very social homeowners can now host parties and entertain their friends and family well with the newly designed layout. A love for cooking inspired the design of the wall above the range. The cabinets were built by hand by the previous owner who was a professional carpenter. In the interest of honoring his life, we kept the boxes and reconfigured the layout while adding some new custom touches that look like they were always there.

2013 NARI CAPITAL COTY, GRAND AWARD WINNER, RESIDENTIAL KTICHEN $80,001 -$120,000 This Old Town Alexandria home was ready for a major kitchen renovation. After 20 years of putting up with the dark, short cabinets and a dysfunctional traffic pattern and layout, the owners were ready to roll up their sleeves and throw this kitchen out the window. Design challenges include a peninsula that was too big for the space, appliance locations that were all over, a stackable washer and dryer in the middle of the kitchen and a lack of storage. The first step toward a remodeling solution was to move the washer and dryer to a new lower level laundry area. That created space for a new built-in refrigerator, microwave/oven cabinet, pantry and angular end cabinets. This move also created more room on the walls of kitchen for added cabinetry and countertops. The cook top was moved to one of the walls with a custom wood hood over it. Having removed the old bulkheads, there was space for taller cabinets and some glass front cabinetry (with inside lights) to display china. Large crown molding, along with big arched valances, legs and corbels made this brushed stoke custom cabinetry really stand out. A big knee wall and a middle post made the breakfast room too closed in and separated from adjacent family room. By installing a couple of structural beams, the space was opened up and dressed up with a large arch opening to replicate the front hall columns. Similarly, the front door separating the front hall to the kitchen was taken off, widened and then had the same panel arch treatment done. Now all the doorways in the home have a very classy, yet sophisticated detailed molding. A previously wasted corner area is now home to a custom hutch cabinet. The middle island, not only improved the traffic flow, but also dressed up this kitchen with its furniture look. The expansion of hardwood flooring, from the front hall into the kitchen and beyond, created a seamless transition to the entire first floor. Use of this highly custom brushed stroke glazed cabinetry in a soft vanilla tone complemented the uniqueness of a slab of granite. The light color tumbled marble backsplash made the glazing of this cabinetry stand out. The transformation of this kitchen was so incredible that no one believes the before photos.

It is a classic Mediterranean Revival in the Floridian tradition of Mizner.” This single-family residential home in Gables Estates, Coral Gables, Florida, successfully pays respect to the architecture of the Mediterranean and Renaissance Italian styles. From the use of courtyards to the high level of detailing, this project emphasizes the most picturesque and expressive qualities of these styles. The residence reflects the visions of two of Coral Gables’ first architects, who designed beautiful and timeless architecture in this garden city to become a lasting piece in the landscape. This project not only captures the breathtaking views of Biscayne Bay, but with timeless style and lush landscaping, it creates a centerpiece for the view from the bay to Coral Gables. The home is designed as a long gallery, with spaces connected by courtyards and public realms. Another large inspiration for this project was the idea of the garden and landscape. With Coral Gables as a garden city, landscape became an integral part of the conception and design. The durability of Marvin products, their ability to stand up to the South Florida climate, as well as the Marvin attention to detail and proportion, made them the perfect choice to employ in a project of such high standards. The range of products allowed the freedom of design to explore all possibilities and turn visions into reality. The result was a lasting piece of architecture that would reflect a level of detail in every part of its structure. We reconfigured this kitchen - removing a wall - to allow for a large island for entertaining. With two young children, durability was key. We chose Brownstone stools customized with performance fabric on the back to introduce a bit of pattern and wipeable faux leather seats. The backsplash over range is a single slab of Eureka Danby from Vermont's Dorsett Mountain, which wipes down easily. The Lostine pendants and sconces introduce a smidge of midcentury vibes. The tongue and groove backsplash and soapstone counters provide a quaint farmhouse feel; and we chose the fabric for the roman shade from a Parisian fabric house, Antoinette Poisson, which specializes in 18th century pattern designs, to add a bit of history.

Beaux arts architecture of Blairsden was inspiration for kitchen. Homeowner wanted clean airy look while repurposing cold commercial cooking space to an aesthetically pleasing functional kitchen for family and friends or for a catering staff during larger gatherings. Aside from the hand made LaCornue range, no appliances were to be be in the kitchen so as not to interfere with the aesthetic. Instead, the appliances were moved to an adjacent space and celebrated as their own aesthetic with complimentary stainless steel cabinetry and tiled walls. The color pallet of the kitchen was intentionally subtle with tones of beige white and grey. Light was reintroduced into the space by rebuilding the east and north windows. Traffic pattern was improved by moving range from south wall to north wall. Custom stainless structural window, with stainless steel screen and natural brass harlequin grill encapsulated in insulated frosted glass, was engineered to support hood and creates a stunning backdrop for the already gorgeous range. All hardware in kitchen is unlacquered natural brass intentionally selected so as to develop its own patina as it oxides over time to give a true historic quality. Simplified, clean, modern & functional would describe this finished kitchen. The original 1990s space was encumbered with posts and arches over the sink wall, making this narrow space seem even narrower. Our first step in simplifying the room was removing all the architectural superfluity and the ceiling soffit. We also removed the step-in pantry at the end of the fridge wall where it meets the family room and bar. We refashioned the island to serve as a workspace with storage, omitting seating because the homeowner didn’t need it. Faux doors at the family room end of the island finished the piece handsomely. Where the pantry used to be, we built a coffee bar and added a microwave drawer. The coffee bar is hidden behind the pocket doors of an appliance garage. We kept the wall ovens and built a cabinet pantry on the same wall, allowing for a convenient cooking triangle. The Wolf range top and custom hood offer a nice focal point with a backsplash of hand made clay tile for texture and variety. The lighted transom cabinets on either side of the hood and flanking the window provide texture, light and interest for displaying the clients’ cherished items. The hand made clay backsplash extends across the sink wall for unity and design coherence.
