Inspiration for a cottage great room remodel in Austin

The homeowner tasked SV Design to create spaces in their home that reflected their character and personality. The project started off with adding a coffee bar, which then turned into a full design project that SV tailored room by room. The home has a mix of traditional and transitional design with a slight emphasis on a southern hospitality to this New England home. The music room was furnished to appreciate the collection of books to accommodate a grand piano and to allow for cozy seating at the fireplace. We selected a curved sofa with a matching curved table, to draw attention to the room’s centerpieces— the fireplace and piano. The wood tones of the space give a cozy feel, perfect for a chilly fall day.

Governed by a white and red theme, we used sophisticated modern furnishings to divide the room into separate areas. For the TV area, we used a big square tufted cushion sectional in red with throw pillows and complemented it with a similar patterned coffee table and a futuristic rocking chair in white. The other area, which is more suitable for conversations, features four round sofa chairs in white and a circular center table in wood. We made the room more interesting through abstract wall art and a poodle dog sculpture in silver. A curved sectional sofa and round tufted leather ottoman bring comfort and style to this Aspen great room. Introducing these circular forms in to a large rectangular space helped to divide the room and create a seamless flow. It's a great gathering spot for the family. The shaped area rug was customized to define the seating arrangement.

This newly built Old Mission style home gave little in concessions in regards to historical accuracies. To create a usable space for the family, Obelisk Home provided finish work and furnishings but in needed to keep with the feeling of the home. The coffee tables bunched together allow flexibility and hard surfaces for the girls to play games on. New paint in historical sage, window treatments in crushed velvet with hand-forged rods, leather swivel chairs to allow “bird watching” and conversation, clean lined sofa, rug and classic carved chairs in a heavy tapestry to bring out the love of the American Indian style and tradition. The conversion of this iconic American barn into a Writer’s Studio was conceived of as a tranquil retreat with natural light and lush views to stimulate inspiration for both husband and wife. Originally used as a garage with two horse stalls, the existing stick framed structure provided a loft with ideal space and orientation for a secluded studio. Signature barn features were maintained and enhanced such as horizontal siding, trim, large barn doors, cupola, roof overhangs, and framing. New features added to compliment the contextual significance and sustainability aspect of the project were reclaimed lumber from a razed barn used as flooring, driftwood retrieved from the shores of the Hudson River used for trim, and distressing / wearing new wood finishes creating an aged look. Along with the efforts for maintaining the historic character of the barn, modern elements were also incorporated into the design to provide a more current ensemble based on its new use. Elements such a light fixtures, window configurations, plumbing fixtures and appliances were all modernized to appropriately represent the present way of life.

Major gut renovation of this coastal estate preserved its basic layout while expanding the kitchen. A veranda and a pair of gazebos were also added to the home to maximize outdoor living and the water views. The interior merged the homeowners eclectic style with the traditional style of the home. It’s all about the view, with a seamless transition from outdoors to inside. We love the modern twist on the traditional waterfront theme, as the ocean is reflected in the hand woven turquoise and blue rug. A custom deep curved sofa provides plenty of family seating, angled for both conversation and a perfect view. The curved shapes of the sofa, coffee table and teal swivel chairs bring softer edges to the condo’s strong architectural angles. The wallpapered tray ceilings mirror the endless sky view from the surrounding windows.

The nature influenced wallpaper adds an Art Nouveau style flair to this interior. With the rich jewel-tones creating the feeling of comfort and ease, this hi-lo mix of furnishings is a combination of both new and rare-find consignment pieces. The dark wood slat blinds marry well with this warm style, as well as as well as the beautiful, tufted, green velvet sectional creating an ideal place for entertaining and conversation.
