With a little bit of effort (or a lot if you want something elaborate) you can turn your small balcony ideas into a reality, whether that’s a place to relax and take in the view or party with company.

Fit in Some Furniture

Regardless of how small your balcony may be, there’s always room for a little bit of furniture — even one piece! Decide on how you want to use your space first, then choose an item or two that’s essential to making that dream a reality. Consider the following options to furnish your compact balcony:

• Table and chairs: A simple bistro set is ideal for sharing an al fresco meal. Look for a folding set so you can stash them to the side as needed.
• Swing chair or hammock: If lounging is your aim, find one quality hammock or swing chair that fits your balcony and make it the shining star.
• Over-the-railing table: To squeeze in a dining solution, try adding a bartop over your railing. It only needs to fit the width of a plate to be functional, and you can add folding bar stools to complete the scene.
• Bench seat: For seating that can double as storage, try a bench seat that lifts up or slides out to house extra supplies. Something built-in, or even a deck box with cushions, would do the trick.
• Cushions and pillows: While these may not feel like typical furniture, in a small footprint they can have a big impact. Try large floor pillows and outdoor cushions to create a cozy nook.

• Fire: Flames have a certain allure that is so appealing for outdoor spaces. If you’re drawn to fire, look for a small tabletop fireplace or a fire table that can double as a coffee table when not in use.
