Conceptually the Clark Street remodel began with an idea of creating a new entry. The existing home foyer was non-existent and cramped with the back of the stair abutting the front door. By defining an exterior point of entry and creating a radius interior stair, the home instantly opens up and becomes more inviting. From there, further connections to the exterior were made through large sliding doors and a redesigned exterior deck. The name of this project says it all. It is a home with materials, elements and details that are assembled in a modernist style that all have purpose and meaning to the Owners. This is a goal for every project, but in this case, extra care by the interior designer who is one of the Owners is evident as you move through the interior and exterior spaces. Exterior wall materials include a combination of split face earth tone natural brick and an off-white stucco finish. The interior finishes are a combination of stone tiles, various soft toned wood patterned finishes, wall coverings and fabrics, etc. that all give each space its own personality. Light fixtures follow suit with an array of designs that can set different moods for each room. It starts with the approach to a symmetrical front elevation that features an intimate entry porch with a hand-carved arched wood front door. There is an intentional elegance to the entry experience of the foyer, keeping it clean and modern, yet welcoming. Dark elements of contrast are brought in through the front door, natural slate floors, sconces, balusters and window sashes. The staircase is a transitional expression through the continuity of the closed stringer and gentle curving handrail that becomes the newel post. The curve of the bottom treads opens up the stair in a welcoming way. An expansive window on the stair landing overlooks the front entry. The 16’ tall window is softened with trimmed drapery and sconces march up the stair to provide a human scale element. The roof line of the exterior brings the ceiling down above the door to create a more intimate entry in a two-story space.

When the Owners approached Goggans Architecture about renovation of a 90’s era oceanfront house, it was clear there would be a lot more to the renovation than mere updates and remedying deferred maintenance. One of the most significant issues was how to integrate an outdoor pool given the pool had to be within the building envelope, and the house was already abutting the setback on its ocean side. A second significant challenge was how to provide a roof top deck over a pitched roof house with an attic, that was functional and attractive. Finally, creating better access from the parking area to the kitchen was a priority. Goggans Architecture addressed the placement of a pool by creating a walled courtyard at the front, or landward side, of the house. The pool was placed on one side of the entry walkway, while its composition was balanced by a parterre garden on the other side of the walkway. The roof top deck was resolved by adding a new staircase and passageway through former attic space. By using a motorized roof hatch, the Owners could ascend to the roof deck which perched just below the roof ridge, hidden from view from the street. Relocating an underneath stair from one side of the house to a point that was closer to the kitchen resolved the access issue. These strategic moves created other opportunities, such as expansion of the master bathroom to a portion of the front porch, while allowing an exterior stair from the bath directly to the pool. Other enhancements included placement of a large folding door in the Great room, renovation and expansion of the kitchen and exterior decks, reorganization, and replacement of the fenestration, updating all baths and interior and exterior finishes. The extensive renovation reflects the holistic approach of Goggans Architecture, marrying landscape architecture, architecture, and interiors.
