Most of the interior walls will have sound insulation, all exterior walls have insulation and all plates and stud-packs are caulked. The painter will caulk ship lap joints when they paint.

Looks amazing! Was the trim installed over the Shiplap? I’m currently installing real Shiplap that is 3/8” thick. I am having trouble visualizing how the trim and Shiplap will come together to look aesthetically pleasing.

If the ship lap is 3/8" and your trim is 3/4" I suppose you could have the shiplap die into the 3/4" trim (base/case/crown)...although that may pose some challenges depending upon the framing or blocking behind it. If you run your shiplap first (being that it is a similar depth to 1/2" drywall) you could apply trim over the top of it and not have too much trouble around door and window jambs. The issue with shiplap behind trim is filling/painting shiplap grooves where they meet vertical trim. Might be best to mock it up to see what looks and works best. I think on this house the trim is over the shiplap.

Are there any seams in the shiplap? How long are the pieces? 1 inch thickness and 8 inch width correct?
  • PRO
    Markalunas Architecture Group

The shiplap is 1x8 so 3/4" x 7 1/4" with a 3/16" gap or reveal. each piece is an individual board so there are seams at the ends of each board. Trim carpenter usually uses "biscuits" and glue to join pieces together, then sands joints. Painter does the rest.

Trim and wall paneling are "Satin" finish.

Is the trim the same color as the walls. Is the trim semi and the walls matte?

All paneling/wood trim is the same color...finish is "satin" I think.

My builder is looking to use tongue and groove shiplap. Is that what you used here?

This is the basic profile that we typically use...sizes can vary depending upon the height that you want, the gap size, and the thickness.

I believe that the shiplap paneling was primed prior to installation. The final painting was completed after the trim carpenter finished trim work in the house.

That is a beautiful rug, unfortunately I do not know where it came from. The furnishings in the home were provided by Linda McDougald of Postcard From Paris.

There is actually no stain on the ceiling. This is old, reclaimed oak tongue and groove material. The supplier ran it through a planer that depending on the thickness of the material either took off a little, some, or a lot of the natural surface to create the different board tones.

I honestly do not know the specific color. The treads were finished and provided by the same company that did the hardwood floors, and were finished to match the hardwood floors. The provider for the flooring was Burchette and Burchette.

The ship lap wall paneling is comprised of individual 1x8 boards placed directly on to the 2x stud wall structure.

The doors are 3 panel MDF. I am not sure who manufactured them, the builder (Resort Custom Homes) may know.

Wood walls are painted Sherwin Williams "Canvas Tan". Drywall is painted Benjamin Moore "Sag Harbor".

Good question! Strive for unique spaces...repurpose materials and use reclaimed pieces or elements that may not cost as much as new and can give a luxury feel without the luxury budget. Focus where you spend your money and if possible reorganize spaces instead of adding on. Hope that helps.

Yes, we used the level of the upper floor to stop the paneling and then added a small trim piece to align with the thickness of the upper level flooring nosing, finally we added an additional trim piece to match up with the upper level baseboard.

      What Houzz contributors are saying:

Interior Wall PanelingThough wood shiplap is rarely used in lieu of drywall anymore (it is installed over drywall in most cases), the relative ease of installation and the warm, textured look have made shiplap a popular choice among discriminating designers and everyday do-it-your-selfers.
